ly. The total budget for the free
lunch this year will run close to
$l,800.u0, of which the P.T.A. has
through its bake sales this summer
and this carnival, raised over one
half the amount. An appeal has

Mrs. Hubbard and F. P. Hittgen

wish to express their appreciation
to everyone contributing to the suc

“Everyone,” they stated, ‘‘did a
wonderful job, and their reward is
in the results. It took the com
bined efforts of teachers, parents,
friends of the school, and the school
officials to put this Carnival across.
We all worked hard, but we had
a wonderful time. It was not
purely a money making affair, but
we can’t help being pleased with
the amount of money raised. Ev
ery dollar made will go to benefit
the school children and will be well
spent.”

Panel Takes
From Page 1
of the panel to speak, told the
group that until Beacon came to
the Swannanoa Valley the people
here made a living from the soil.
Decision of Beacon to establish a
plant here changed the economic
life of the entire community, Mr.
Connelly said. The plant now em
ploys approximately 1400 people.
Roy Alexander, cashier of the
Swannanoa Bank and Trust com
pany, related the history of the
bank from the time it was organ
ized in 1925, because of the com
ing of Beacon, up to the pres
ent time. “It has grown steadily
and all of us believe that we are
serving our community to the best
of our ability," Mr. Alexander
said. The bank was organized
with a capital stock of $25,000 by
local stockholders.
The Rev. George Talbot, pastor
of the Swannanoa Presbyterian
church, explained the importance
of churches to a community, and
George Young. Buncombe county
commissioner of institutions, told
what had been done and what is
being done to bring the schools
up to the desired level
“Buncombe county has done
more per capita than any other
county in the United States to
relieve the school situation. If
the people will just be patient
and give us time to work out the
problem, we’ll get the job done.”
Mr. Young emphasized.
John Brown, a comparative new
comer to the Valley related why
he and his family movecj to Swan
nanoa after having considered
more than 70 other communities.
Summing up what had been
said. Dr. Arthur Bannerman, mod
erator for the panel, said that a
community needed three things:
a sound church system, good
schools, and the basis for a strong
economic life. “Groups like the
Swannanoa Men’s club and the
Swannanoa Woman’s club can do
much toward bringing this about
for the community.” Dr. Banner
man. president of Warren Wilson
college said.
In other business Jack Smith,
club president, announced that the,
community chest drive had been
extended for an additional two
weeks. The club voted to make
a donation to the North Carolina
Symphony and to make 50 gifts
for use at the W.N.C. San. Caro
leers from the Swannanoa Pres
byterian church Sunday school
will sing one night at the san
during the holidays. Charles
Porter reported that some more
work had been completed on the
club house. Sixty-five members
and their guests attended.
