Dr. and Mrs. Billy Graham have returned from a week’s trip to New York City where Dr. Gra ham had to make pictures for the T.V. program. Don Woods, U. S. Army, is spending this week with his moth er and grandmother, Mrs. Samuel Woods and Dr. Nettie Grier in the Grier cottage on Virginia road. Don has been in Fort Jackson tak ing a course in radio. He will leave soon for Fort Knox, Ky., where lie has been assigned to the Advanced Radio school. He has made a high record in radio, and was one of a few chosen to go to this advanced school. Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Williams •spent Thanksgiving day with Mr. " iiliam sister in Knoxville, Tenn. Mr. and Mrs. Francis Wyly drove to Marietta, Ga., for Thanksgiving with the Rev. and Mrs. Harry Holland and family. Mrs. Julia Wyly is spending the winter with her daugiiter, Mrs. Hollail I, tney had a family re union there. The Wylys attend ed the Georgia-Tech football game on Thanksgiving afternoon. Miss Grace Hardie left Satur day for New York City where she will spend the winter with friends. She will spend some time with her sister. Mrs. W. T. Bell, of Glenn Ridge, N. Y. Miss Harriet Orr of Charlotte spent Thanksgiving in the John ston home. She had as her guests Miss Altha Bowman, Mrs. Coch ran, Miss Elizabeth Sloan, and Miss Winnie Grier, all of Char lotte, who spent the wi(‘k-end here. Blake Brinkerhoff was home for Thanksgiving from Davidson col lege. There w'ere many other Da vidson students who spent Thanks giving in Montreat. Dec. 1.—The “Finer ! arollna contest will be repeated in 1954 with Carolina Power & ■iKht company, its sponsor, offer ing another $9,550 in cash prizes for town-building and soil-building winners. I hat announcement was made j'y L. N. Pope, contest director, here today on the closing date for 19,id competition among 108 towns hy December 15, Pope said, and winners will be announced in Feb ruary. Towns have until next February 1 to enter the 1954 contest, he said, and any developments they wish to start between now and then may be listed among their projects. About 1,500 farmers who are vying for individual 1953 prizes for “helping to build a Finer Caro lina" have the rest of this year to complete their soil and water conservation projects. County and area conservationists will judge them, and these winners also will be announced next February, Pope said. He added that complete details for the 1954 contest will be issued later. MISS IRENE LEDBETTER HONORED ON BIRTHDAY Mr. and Mrs. Frank Ledbetter entertained with a party Saturday afternoon, Nov. 21, at their home on North Fork in celebration of the seventh birthday of their daughter, Irene. Games were played and a favor given to each child. Refreshments were served to the following children, Shirley Huney cutt, Sandra Wilson, Flo Rarnhill, Lynn Hemphill, Patty Morford, Barbara Boone, Dorothy II. Styles, Jennie Stepp, Suzzanne Reed, Pan Taylor, Carole and Ronnie Wat kins, Barbara and Mack Blizzard, Barry Jolly, Bruce McMahan, Kenneth McKinney, Johnny Reese, Terry Ledbetter, Joe Sansosti and the honoree. Mothers present were: Mrs. Frank Watkins, Mrs. Charles Stepp, Mrs. John Reese, Mrs. Charles Taylor, and Mrs. Styles. Irene received many lovely gifts. KERLEES ENTERTAIN BRIDGE CLUB Last Saturday night Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Kerlee entertained their bridge club at their home, “Over Yonder.” At the end of play Douglas Jones and Mrs. W. A. Allison held high score. The hos tess presented each guest with a novelty ash tray. A sweet course was served to Mr. and Mrs. Alli son, Mr. and Mrs. Jones, Mrs. D. P. Dinwiddie, A. C. Leonard, C. E. Keith and the host and hostess. of Omicron Delta Kappa. This national honorary fraternity stresses character, leadership, and scholastic achievement. Only a select group are tapped for this honor every year, and Alden is certainly to be congratu lated. Mrs. Collins Lee has returned to her home on Mississippi road from a round-the-world trip. She re ports a fine trip and is in good health. She will spend Christmas in her old home in Covington, Ky. She will also visit her son and family in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Rev. and Mrs. Fred Hopkins and family of York, S. C., spent Thanksgiving in their cottage on West Virginia Road. Trucks use 8W billion gallons of gasoline every year.
