The Elizabeth Hale circle met Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 at the home of Mrs. (ieorge McElrath ir Black Mountain. Mrs. Albert Reed Sr., circle chairman, was in charge of the business session. Minutes were read and reports given by the chairman of committees. Mrs. Free Davidson conducted the program on Carver School of Missions and Social Work. Mrs. W. C. Shopc gave the devotionals from John 12:20-26, after which she sang a solo “We Would See Jesus,” em phasizing the motto of the school. Mrs. Ben West gave an account of the school from Royal Service, Mrs. Clarence Wood told “Thank You Teacher,” from Southern Bap tist Home Missions. Mrs. C. W. Smith and Mrs. Billy McCurry gave accounts from Carver School of Missions as from the W. M. U. Year Book. She is survived by four daugh ters, Mrs. McCall and Mrs. I,. Q. Nnens of Charlotte, Mrs. Ila Wil son of Monroe, and Mrs. Burnette; four sons, George and Norman of Charlotte, Frank of Asheville, and Hill of Columbia, S. C.; a sister, Mrs. I). T. Pcniger of Charlotte; 21 grandchildren and several great grandchildren. Burial was in Sharon Memorial Park, Charlotte. The Rev. Murray \V. Griffith, pastor of Parkwood A. R. Da Dr, Whims Will Discuss Polio Vaccination The Grammar School PTA will meet tonight (Thursday) at 7:30 p m in the school auditorium. Mrs. Billie Burgess' room will be in charge of the devotional. Business will include the nomination and election of officers for the coming year. The speaker for the evening will be Dr. II. C. Whims, Bun combe county health officer. His subject will be the Salk vaccine against polio, which will be used in nationwide tests for the first time this year. Black Mountain was one of the schools selected to participate in this new anti-polio program. Al though the State Board of Health has decided against the use of the vaccine in North Carolina this year, due to delays in receiving the vaccine until the beginning ot the polio season, every parent is interested in any new weapon to be used in the fight against polio. Dr. Whims is a qualified speaker, having been in charge of the polio hospital at Hickory in the epidemic of the '40’s. vidson, Mrs. E. E. Capps, Miss Elizabeth Davidson, Mrs. C. P. Whitson, Mrs. J. M. Buckner, and Mrs. Allen Campfield. The Evening Circle of the First Presbyterian church met Monday night at the home of Mrs. Frank Huggins with Hi members present. Mrs. George Young presided in the absence of the chairman, Mrs. Sam Alexander. Mrs. W. H. Mc Murrny, Sr., gave the Bible study. Mi'. George Young introduced the guest speaker, Chris Arno, super intendent of the County Receiving Home. He spoke on Juvenile De linquency in the Receiving Home. The members were all urged to at tend the next meeting of the Wo men of the Church which njeets Monday, April 19, at the church. Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Mackey and daughter Patsy, from Westminis ter, S. C., visited with Mr. and Mrs. Vick Tipton and Teddy, Mr. and Mrs. Wade Martin and daugh ter Nancy Jo, and other friends in Swannanoa over the week-end. A-lc Thomas R. Allen stationed at the Donaldson Air Force Base in Greenville, S. C., visited with his parents and brother, Mr. and Mrs. Edison Allen and Harold, Saturday and Sunday. The primary department of the First Baptist church will hold an Easter egg hunt this Saturday af ternoon from 2 o’clock until four in the square in Grovemont. A D-2 Buddy Gibson serving with the Navy Coast Guard Air Detachment on Guam has just re turned to the States. He arrived last Wednesday to spend a thirty day leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Whit Gibson of Swan nanoa, after which he will return to San Francisco. The Baptist Adult Training Un ion enjoyed a fried chicken supper Saturday night at six o’clock in the Baraea room of the church. Mrs. Bill McCurry social chairman was in charge of refreshments. Games were played. Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Macky of Westminister, S. C., visited with the group. Approx imately 36 attended. Bobby Gragg, who has been in Miami, Fla., for several months, is visiting a few days with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Gragg Richmond ave. Mrs. Ralph Wilkerson, Mrs. Pat ty Gaddy and son Randy, Miss Barbara Jones, and Miss Rayburn left Friday to visit a week with relatives in New York City. The district convention of the Woman’s Auxiliary will meet at the Swannanoa Free Will Baptist church Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock. Guests speakers will be Mrs. L. E. Ballard of Ayden, N. C., and Mrs. Harold Stevens, who is home on furlough from Mseleni Mission Station, South Africa. Bascombe Robinson of Burns ville has just returned from spend ing the winter in Miami, Fla. He visited Monday evening with his son and family, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Robinson, Dean and Janice. Next week on Tuesday the spring meeting of the Presbytery will meet in Waynesville. Sunday, April 18, there will be special Easter services in the fol lowing churches. Swannanoa Meth odist at 5:45 Sunday morning. At the Free Will Baptist church East er sunrise service at 6:00 a. m. with the Rev. James Cordell of Horney Heights Baptist church, guest speaker. All are invited. The First Presbyterian church will participate in the Sunrise Inter Valley Church Association at the Riceville Presbyterian church, 6:00 a. m. Easter cantata Sunday night 7:30, First Baptist church. Ten young people from the Swannanoa Presbyterian church met at the Riceville Presbyterian church and enjoyed a sandwich supper meeting at 6:30 Sunday night with the inter Valley Church Association Young People. The Beta club will have the pin gram and a discussion for Pre School clinic will be the hightlights of your Swannanoa Parent and Teachers association to be held Thursday night at 7:30 at the school. All parents are urged to attend. Mr. and Mrs. Monroe Fortune returned from Long Beach, Cal., last Friday. They will be at then home for the summer. I' Lyric Tenor . r ** jr I When the Swannanoa P.T.A. pre sents the Grass Roots Opera pro duction of Carmen at the school auditorium, April 23, William Al len, lyric tenor of Raleigh will be heard in the role of Remendado. Mr. Allen is a singer of wide ex perience having appeared in lead ing tenor roles with the Seaboard Opera Festival Group, Piedmont Music Festival Association, Cape Fear Festival Association and the Colony Opera Guild. With these various groups he has appeared in THE STUDENT PRINCE, CAR MEN. MARTHA, THE MAGIC FLUTE, HMS PINAFORE, THE MIKADO, THE GONDOLIERS. LA TRAVIATA, THE BARTERED BRIDE and THE TALES OF HOFFMAN. With Grass Roots Opera he appears in CARMEN, LA TRAVIATA, SCHOOL FOR LOV ERS, DON PASQUALE. and LA ROHEME. During the 1952 season he toured the United States with the Wagner Opera company's pro duction of CARMEN. Safely Council Sets Meeting The first meeting of the Black Mountain Safety Council will be held Tuesday evening, April 27, at 8:00 o’clock at “Homing,” the resi dence of Mrs. James A. Crawford on North Fork road. Sgt. Edward W. Jones of the state highway pa trol will be present as a consultant and he has consented to serve as a regular member of the council. Definite safety projects will be dis cussed and the best methods for accomplishing these projects. The following are members of this first safety council and are urged to be present at the first meeting: Mayor G. L. Kirkpatrick will serve as the town’s represen tative of the town council: R, T. COX, Deceased. n&pw club Donates To Fund At the business meeting Mon day night at the home of Miss Pauline Tipton the Black Moun tain Business and Professional Woman’s club voted to provide lunches for two children for the remainder of the year. Plans were made for sending delegates to the state convention in Charlotte, at which the local club hopes to help elect Miss Margaret Johnston of Wavnesville as second vice-president of the state organization. Mrs. John O'Connor, president, gave an excellent yearly report on the club activities. She also announced the P.T.A. box supper to be held at the grammar school April 24 to raise money for free lunches. Mr. O’Connor was chosen by the group to represent the B&PW club in the beauty contest to be held in connection with the box supper. Miss Tipton told of the coopera tion of the high school in the vocational guidance program.
