Why lose income and see land values go down when so many lead ing farmers have proved—time and again—that proper conservation practices mean more profit. It's often the difference between profit and loss from farming. Mark Twain said, "Everybody talks about the weather, but nobody does anything." But con servation practices like irrigation, strip cropping, contour fanning and others can help even out the effect of weather on your crops. Planned water ways and drainage systems also help prevent erosion of crop-producing topsoil. The facts are available, test cases are record ed, and all the knowledge necessary for starting a soil conservation plan on your farm is in the hands oi your County Soil Conservation Commit tee. Millions of acres of Carolina farms are under so-.l conservation plans but millions of acres are still not using conservation practices. We at C. P. & L. are proud that in the 60-County Finer Carolina area, 1,598 farms totaling 670,422 acres have entered the 1954 "Finer Fcrms" Contest based on soil and water conservation. Each farmer agreed to start one new conservation prac tice or expand an existing one. There is still a long way to go before every farm is benefitting from soil conser vation. The Senate did not meet the original deadline of adjournment on July 31. A Husy 1\ eek. The lengthy debate on the Atom ic Energy bill ended after 13 days of discussion which included four all-night sessions. There were a number of amendments passed by the Senate, and I supported these amendments because I honestly be lieve they make the bill better and protect the public s interests, and at the same time they prevent gov - ernment monopoly. The bill passed by a vote of 58-2/. 1 voted for it. \tomic Energy. This new secret of nature, atom ic energy, has the greatest po tential for good if we can prevent the world’s greedy nations from using it for aggression. The great storehouse of energy in the atom must be used to help defend our way of life and at the same time it is important to further develop it for domestic peace-time uses. The Tax Hill. We passed the tax bill hist week after Senate and House conferees had worked out some differences that existed in the two versions of the bill. While there may be i few minor features about the bill that I would like to have seen changed; it is. 1 am convinced, a fairly good tax bill on the whole. I had hoped for more individual tax relief than the hill provides. It was my opinion that reductions in foreign economic aid could off set any loss of revenue that tax relief would bring about. All in all. this problem of taxation and budget balancing is one that will BROAD RIVER BAPTIST CHURCH Pastor, Rev. Wade Huntley. —Sunday— Sunday school, 10 a. m. Preaching service, 11 a. m.
