The Black Mountain Garden club had its annual Thanksgiving banquet at the community club house last Thursday night. It's worth digging in organic soil the whole year just to get to attend this ambrosial feast. Turkey roasted by the greatest cooks in this country, and all the fixings that go with it. After supper Dr. J. H. Graver and Miss Sarah Kir by presented a most interesting program, followed by a contest of naming 21 luscious apples. Al though 1 spent my boyhood in ap ple trees. 1 failed to name a sin gle one. I heard in the smoking room the other day that worry makes the hair and beard grow faster. The host of friends that Minnie and I have made through this medium is heart warming, indeed. It is the nice things that you say that make us keep on, for it does become a bur den at times with old Father Time slashing at one's heels with a dull blade. Of course there has been criticism, but the compliments ov ershadow this. And on this, the most American of all holidays, thoughts go back to the first Thanksgiving and what it really meant. It was a bare bounty for which the Pilgrim* knelt to thank God. Their harvest was not a rich one they faced the prospect of a long, bleak winter to be followed by an uncertain Spring. But still, those who had survived the rigorous year just past were deeply thankful for all that they had . . and did not dwell upon that which they had not. It was their faith and the faith of others like them which has enabled our country to survive and flourish. Today, more than ever, we and our children need faith like that. We need to kneel in thanks for a bounty far richer than that known or dreamed of by the Pilgrims.
