With HB By Elizabeth Dinwiddle I Mr. and Mrs. Harold Stepp of Huntsville, Ala., spent the week end with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Finley Stepp. Miss Irene Beauchamp Watson has returned to her home on View street after having- been in Eng land and Pennsylvania. She re ports that she is happy to be back in Black Mountain. Mr. and Mrs. W'ade Morrow spent the week-end with their son in-law and daughter Mr. and Mrs. James Helgreen in Charlotte. On Sunday Mr. and Mrs. M. E. Rondel, Bobby Rondel, Mrs. G. R. Danen hower and Mrs. Madelon Parks drove down and ate dinner \* ith the Helgreens and the Morrows. While Lt. and Mrs. Max Flack and Phillip were here with mem bers of their families they visited the G. C. Smith family in Atlanta and the R. W. Kay family in Cor nelia, Ga. She will visit her daughter, Mrs. D. I. Roedel and family of Miami Shores and Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Weaver of Miami. She will also visit Miss Daisy E. Erb, a former resident of Black Mountain, who is now making her home at the Episcopal home in Davenport. Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Tedder left last Thursday for Dallas, Tex., where Mr. Tedder will serve as educational director at the Claren den Drive Baptist church. Mr. and Mrs. H. W. Sanders, Blue Ridge, observed their wed ding anniversary on March 7. Mr. and Mrs. B. B. Collins and Mrs. Earl Annis of Hickory visit ed Mr. and Mrs. Thad Burnette, Ji. and family over the week-end. The Collinses are Mrs. Burnette’s par ents and Mrs. Annis is a sister. Last week another sister, Mrs. George Bumgarner of Nashville, Tenn., visited the Burnettes. Mrs. H. C. Burnett, Blue Ridge road, has returned home after spending the winter in Tucson, Ariz., with her daughter, Mrs. L. K. Baumgarner. Terry K. Guthrie enlisted in the air force and is now stationed at Lackland Air Force Base, San An tonio, Texas. Mrs. Jack Shaw returned last Thursday from an extended visit with her daughter and family, M Sgt. and Mrs. James P. Randolph of Wichita Falls, Texas. Mrs. and Mrs. Gordon Green wood observed their wedding anni versary Tuesday, March 8. Mrs. Walter Clevenger and daughter, Mrs. Tommy Thompson of Newport, Tenn., visited the Charles Clevenger family last week. The two Mrs. Clevengers are sisters. Mr. and Mrs. James A. Brittain celebrated their tenth wedding anniversary on March 5. Miss Grace Fanning has re turned from a visit with relatives in Washington, D. C., and friends in Charlotte. The Rev. and Mrs. David Parks stopped over the week-end to visit Mrs. Parks’ parents. Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Osteen, Sr. They were en route from Elberton, Ga., to Jack son, Miss., where the Rev. Mr. Parks will serve as assistant pas tor in the First Presbyterian church in Jackson. S/Sgt. and Mrs. Wade Rice of Panama City, Fla., are spending a few days with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Higginbotham. They Mrs. Byles Dies In Hospital Mrs. Mae Hoffman Byles, <>4, died Sunday, March 6, in an Ashe ville hospital after a brief illness. Funeral services were held Wed nesday morning in St. Margaret Mary Catholic church in Grove mont. Pallbearers were W. L. Wheelon, A. T. Cook, James Jolly, Ross Taylor, John Gary McGraw, and Albert Garland. Honorary pallbearers were A. P. Perley, H. McGuire Wood. C. T. Sobol, Stanley Garland and L. 0. Poteat. Surviving are three sisters. Miss Pauline Hoffman of Black Moun tain and Chicago, Mrs. A. J. Fries of Fond-du-Lac, Wis., and Mrs. Charles Lantz of Escanaha. Mich., one brother, Joseph Hoffman of Escanaba. __ came especially to attend the God frey-Wade wedding to be held Thursday (tonight) in the Presby terian church. Among those attending the ban quet in Montreat Monday night in honor of Dr. and Mrs. Billy Gra ham were the Rev. and Mrs. \\ R. Klein, the Rev. and Mrs. Wilbur Huneycutt, Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Finch, Mr. and Mrs. William Hick ey. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Barkley, Mr. and Mrs. Henry T. Ware, Mr. and Mrs. Willard K. Weeks, Ross Taylor, the Rev. Robert Walters and Gordon Greenwood, Dr. Gra ham will leave Saturday for an evangelistic campaign in the Brit ish Isles and on the Continent. Mrs. Robert Borgman anil daugh ters, Mary Alice and Hannah, who have been residing in Edgewood, Md., are visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. G. Guess for a week. Dr. Borgman will join them here sometime within the next few days, after he receives his discharge from the army at Fort Meade, Md. He will resume his practice in Asheville. Mrs. Gene Reagan and Stephanie of Petersburg, Va., spent last week with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. 0. B. Norton and sister, Miss Eloise Norton. On Friday the Nortons drove Mrs. Reagan and Stephanie to their home. They returned to Black Mountain Sunday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. William Hickey spent Sunday in Spruce Pine with Mr. Hickey's sister, Miss Anna Hickey. Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Hemphill Jr., have moved into their new home on the Ridgecrest highway. Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Brooks spent the week-end with Mr. Brooks’ brother-in-law and sister, Dir. and Mrs. W. E. Martin of Cherry Grove Beach, S. C. Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Eberbach of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Mrs. W. C. Klotz of Toronto, Canada, ar rived last Friday from a short stay in Florida to spend the week end with the Halls at “Fair Lawn Lodge.” Mrs. Klotz is a sister of the Halls. She remained for a longer visit with her family. montreat Ry Miss Julia Stokes The worship service of the Mon treat Presbyterian church was held in Gaither Chapel at 11 o’clock Sundav morning. The pastor, the Rev. Stanley Bennett, preached on “The Great Steal," based on Mal achi 3:8-10. The High school glee club furnished the singing, lead by Mrs. Allan Guy. Frances Mouzon was at the organ. The flowers in the church were given by the Misses Jean and Edith Tait in memory of their mother. Mrs. James C. Tait, and sister, Miss Irene Tait. The college chorus will go on tour Friday, March 11, and end on March 21. They will yisit and give concerts in Alabama and South Carolina. The young people met in the sun parlor of the Assembly Inn at 4:30 Sunday afternoon. The young adults met in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Victor Schoen. The subject for discussion was “The Christian." The meet ing was at 8 p. m. on Sunday. The life service group met at 8 p. m. in Gaither Chapel with Miss June I.amb as guest speaker. Miss Lamb is sailing to Japan in a few weeks under the Board of World Missions. She has already spent two years in Japan with the Atom ic Bomb Casualty Commission. Ev eryone was invited to this meeting. A Spiritual Enrichment week ha? been planned for the congregation, the college, and the high school during the last week of March. Services will be held each morn ing at 10:15 and each evening at 7:30 from Tuesday, March 29 through Friday, April 1. The preachers will be: 29th, the Rev. William Klein, Black Moun tain: 30th, the Rev. Warren Thus ton, Hendersonville: 31st, Dr. C. Grier Davis, Asheville First; April 1, the Rev. W. W. Preston, Mal vern Hills. The women of the church will hold their regular monthly meet ing on Tuesday, March 15 at 4 p. m. in the sun parlor of the As sembly Inn. The president Mrs. L. Nelson Bell will preside. Mrs. ,1. Rupert McGregor will introduce the speaker for the day, Dr. A. C. Holt. The men of Montreat had to postpone their meeting until March 14. This will be a supper meet ing and will be in Assembly Inn at 6:30 p. m. The president Dr. A. C. Holt will preside. Fred Burnett of Ridgecrest will be the guest speaker. The banquet for Dr. Billy Gra ham and his family and members of his team as a farewell was giv en by the Montreat college and Mountain Retreat association on Monday night at 7 o’clock in As sembly Inn. The tables were dec orated' in spring flowers and more than 300 guests attended. The speakers included Dr. J. Rupert McGregor, Dr. John R. Cunning ham, State Treasurer Edwin Gill, and Dr. James A. Jones. On next week-end the members of North Carolina Symphony will be guest at Assembly Inn. Cards have been received from Mrs. A. A. McLean that she and Dr. McLean are having a delight ful trip in the Caribbean Sea. They had a tour of Jamaica and other side trips.
