Many, too, have gone into the ministry from Blue Ridge. Nearly a thousand in all have dedicated their lives to the ministry, foreign field, to sec retaryships of the \MCA and YWCA, or to some phase of social or religious work. The two men responsible for the operation of Blue Ridge are Henry T. Ware, executive secretary, and August L. Johnston, resident man ager. Both of these men have had years of training as YMCA secretaries and in the fields of YMCA work. Mr. Ware, a native of Mississip pi, attended Mississippi Southern college and went to the YMCA graduate school in Nashville, Tenn. for his BA and MA degrees in re ligion and philosophy. He also studied two years at the Union Theological Seminary and later at the Boston School of Theology. Among the YMCA posts he has held have been program secretary at Winston-Salem, student secre tary at Mississippi Southern col lege, executive secretary of South ern Area Students of YMCA at Atlanta, and general secretary of the YMCA and director of relig ion at State College of Mississippi —from this last post to his pres ent position in January, 1953. Mr. Ware is also very active in com munity interests, being a member of the Black Mountain Lions club and the Chamber of Commerce. He belongs to the Black Mountain Methodist church and is a member of the board of stewards of that church as well as president of the Methodist Men. Another YMCA post he holds is president of the YMCA Camp Managers of America and he is on the board of directors of the Southern Area Council of the YMCA. Mr. Ware is married and has one son, Malcolm Stewart, serving with the Foreign Affairs Division of the U. S. Army in Austria. His wife is the former Hester Star brough, also of Mississippi. She is district chairman of Christian Social Relations and Local church activities of the Women’s Society of Christian Service and assistant teacher at the Methodist church in Black Mountain. He received his BA degree from Maryville college, Maryville, Tenn., and his MA at Vanderbilt. He then studied two years at the YMCA graduate school and took advanced work at the University Center of the Uni versity of Alabama at Montgom ery. He has been a YMCA secre tary at Vicksburg, Miss., young men’s secretary at Chattanooga, and was loaned by the YMCA to the Dixie Mercerizing Co. during the depression to start a YMCA in their plant town, Lupton City, Tenn. There he acted similar to a city manager taking charge of all activities of the city from building roads and houses to organizing re creation and welfare services. He then became secretary of the city YMCA at Montgomery, Ala., where he remained for 17 years before coming to Blue Ridge. Mr. Johnston is a member of the Southern Area Council of YMCA and has been secretary for that council the past seven years. He is married and has two children, a married daughter living in Mont gomery, Ala., and a son, a stu dent of physics at Maryland col lege. He is a member of the First Baptist church of Black Mountain, the Black Mountain Chamber of Commerce, and the Rotary club of Asheville. There is another man, who, though now retired, has become synonymous with Blue Ridge As sembly—Herb Sanders. Mr. Sand ers retired at the end of 1953 with a total of 38 years of YMCA work, 35 of which were spent at Blue Ridge. Coming from Murfrees boro, Tenn., he first went to Dal las, Texas, as business secretary, then to the Southeastern head quarters of thev YMCA Warwork Council, coming here in 1919. Luck ily for the YMCA, he learned the newspaper business when a boy as a printer’s devil and decided not to stay in that line of work. Read ers would have appreciated, though, his sparkling wit and hu mor. Mr. Sanders and his wife still live at the assembly. He is always on hand to help through his years of experience as resident manager of Blue Ridge. Mr. and Mrs. Sand ers have two grown daughters and are members of the Black Moun tain Methodist church. With summer nearly here Blue Ridge is feverish with activity in preparation for the coming guests. They are preparing with the three fold purpose and function of Blue Ridge in mind: (1) Service to YMCA and other educational and religious conferences, (2) Enter tainment of individuals and fami lies on vacation, (3) Training stu dent leaders in discipline of work, and play, study, and worship. That Blue Ridge fulfills these aims may be seen in the fact that college students applying for staff positions greatly exceed the num ber that can be chosen, and that, as many of the conference groups leave they make their reservations then for the coming year, so that they may be assured of using the facilities and services that Blue Ridge has to offer. -Since the first series E SAV l.VGS BONDS began to mature in May 1951, total maturities have exceeded $14 billion.
