guests during the course of a
summer. There is also the job of
providing meals for the guests as
well as the students of Montreat
college. This means having nearly
100 hotel employees during the
summer and about 36 the rest of
the year.
The spiritual impact of Mon
treat is tremendous. Its confer
ence program includes more than
20 major conferences with a total
number of participants exceeding
30.000. Indeed, in its conference
program, the Montreat religious
strength finds its most evident
expression.

evangelist, who is. at the time
of this writing, conducting a cru
sade in Scotland. At conferences
in the past the late Dr. Robert
Speer was a frequent speaker as
was the late Peter Marshall, about
whom the book “The Man Called
Peter’’ was written.
Montreat also has summer
schools to train missionaries as
well as religious leaders in our
own country. Even the languages
they must know for whatever part
of the world they will be in are
taught during these sessions. Mon
treat is the leading Presbyterian
college in sending out workers to
foreign missions.
Montreat college, under the
presidency of Dr. McGregor, is a
part of the religious emphasis of
Montreat, as is the Montreat Pre
paratory school. The prep school,
under the direction of Miss Annie
Webb, features a high standard of
academic training with a Christian
background and is fully accred
ited.

people and Camp Montreat.
The Montreat Young People's
Program is directed by A. Heath
Whittle, track coach at Davidson
college. More than 1600 young
people take part annually in this
activity which provides separate
recreational and spiritual outlets
for the various age groups.
Camp Montreat is headed by
Mrs. Dorothy Norman and an ex
perienced staff of camp leaders.
Girls from 13 states are already
enrolled for this summer’s pro
gram. It runs for four. six. and
eights weeks’ sessions and offers
a wide range of camp activity for
girls of the intermediate age
groups.
Montreat college, the focal
point of religious and educational
training for young girls, is a four
year institution which offers
training for a number of careers
including the church, teaching and
nursing, emphasis being placed
on Christian development. Though
many of its graduates go into
nursing and secondary education
teaching, 407c or more become
active in church work.
The college program, as well as
the workings of the whole Mon
treat Association, is “Christ-cent
ered. Bible-centered and Church
centered,” believing as it does
that Christian principles are the
only foundation for any society
that makes the brotherhood of
man paramount.
GLEANERS CLASS MEETS

The Gleaners class of the First
Baptist church held its regular
monthly meeting on Thursday,
April 7, at the home of Mrs. T.
M. Farr. Mrs. Beatrice Martin was
co-hostess.
The president, Mrs. Ilagar. Wood,
presided and the devotion was held
by Mrs. Joe Bullock. Those present

for the Loch Ness monster. We
spent one entire afternoon walk
ing around the shores of that
beautiful lake looking for the
creature. But we knew it
wasn't there. Our guide told
us confidentially before the
start of the tour that there was
no monster but that it was just
a gag to draw the tourists. And
it does draw visitors to North
ern Scotland from all over the
world.
It has been a few years now
since the monster was seen in
Loch Ness and longer since it
was photographed. You can
watch the papers anytime now
for some enterprising newspaper
photographer to happen along
while the demon from the deep
is taking a sunbath in the mid
dle of the lake. But in the
words of the Scottish guide:
"That isn't really a picture
of a monster. Someone is just
doing—let me see—what do you
