Howie Mr and Mrs Ed Hilt and daugh ter of Long Branch motored to Marietta, Ga.. over the week end to take Mrs. Hilt’s mother Mrs. McNealey. They returned home late Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Murley Williams and niece of Burnsville were din ner guests of the Monroe Howies Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Bradford Burnette, their son Wesley and their grand daughter, were guests of Mrs. W. C Burnette and the C. M. Howies Sunday afternoon Wesley has been attendng Johnston's Bible school in Tennessee and is spending his summer vacation with his parents, the B C. Burnettes of Bee Tree. Mrs. J. S Kilby of Long Branch has been visiting in Tennessee the past week Mr and Mrs Sammie Harrison and daughters of Florida have been visiting Mr. Harrison's par ents of Bee Tree. Sammie is serv ing in the navy. Mrs. Gertrude Rosheim of Sum ter S C. has been visiting her sister Miss Essie Gragg of the old Black Mountain highway for the past week. Lawrence Howie of Long Branch had a cow of Elmore Burnette’s rented He had her staked and she wound herself up in the chain and fell in a ditch and choked to death Sunday afternoon Claude Reed killed a large rattler in Tipton cove, just off the Bee Tree road last week where he was working. Visiting at Bee Tree Baptist church Sundav morning were Mr. and Mrs Guy Armstrong and son of Asheville. HENSLEY Phone 7537 W S ' ' Route 1 ''YOU MAKE THE NEWS'' District W. M. S. Meeting. The Swannanoa Women's Mis sionary society met June 30 at the Berea Baptist church. The meet ing began with the singing of two hymns “We’ve a Story To Tell To The Nations” and “When I Survey The Wondrous Cross.” Mr. Charles Jollay led the singing accompanied at the piano by Mrs. Jollay. Mrs. M. J. Carter, president of the Berea W. M. S. led the devo tions. reading from Luke IS and Mrs. Pauline Ingle led in prayer. The meeting was then turned over to Mrs. Fred Davidson, new ly elected superintendent of the Swannanoa district. The secre tary. Mrs. Clyde Pickens, called the" roll. Five churches were rep resented. An offering was taken and a study of The Guide to Com munity Missions was announced, to take place on Tuesday, June 28, from 6 to 9 p. m., at the Swan nanoa Baptist church. Mrs. J O. Crenshaw, who is Community Missions chairman for the Bun combe association will teach the book. Mrs. Charles Jollay introduced the guest speaker, Marvin Gar rett, who gave an exceptionally in teresting monologue on Nigeria, with color slides of that African village, its people, means of con veyance and its various churches. Mr. Garrett spoke so lovingly of the people of Nigeria, whom he has grown to love and respect during his stay among them, and presented their need of Christ so earnestly, that all who heard him were given a greater desire and incentive to try to do more in their missionary efforts. Mr. and Mrs. Garrett are on the verge of returning to their home away from home, in Africa, after a leave of absence in America. The meeting came to an end wtih Mrs. W. C. Shope leading the closing prayer. The next meeting will be on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at the Oteen Baptist church. Book Club. Mrs. T. W. Folsom and Mrs. Sam Alexander were co-hostesses June 20 at Mrs. Folsom’s home for the June meeting of the Book club. Mrs. Hal McKinney, chair man, presided. The book report was given by Mrs. W. H. McMurray on Mary Pickford’s autobiography entitled "Mary Pickford.” This book cov ers the ups and downs in the life of this inspiring woman. Those who attended the meet ing were Mrs. W. H. Penley, Mrs. George Young, Mrs. Lester Con nelly, Mrs. Wm. Faucette, Mrs. John Kellv, Mrs. W. W. Corne, Mrs. W. H. McMurray, Mrs. Ar tus Moser, Mrs. Hal McKinney. Mrs. Roy Luckadoo and the hos I tesses. Refreshments were served : during the social hour. Plans are being made for the club picnic to be in July, in place of the regular meeting, with the families of the : members as guests. Conducts Revival. The Rev. John C. Wright re ; cently concluded a very successful revival at the Dry Branch Free Will Baptist church in Marshall. During the two weeks of the reviv al 31 persons were converted. Housewarming. Mrs. I la Eller, who recently ! moved back to the village, was really surprised last Thursday evening when she answered a knock at the door and was con fronted by a large group of friends and neighbors. The group includ ed Mrs. Thelma Ensley, Mrs. Ruby Edmonds, Mrs. Mary Brown, Mrs. Mildred Rector, Mrs. Edith Ben nett, Mrs. Bob Robinson, Mrs. Bertha Carroll, Mrs. F. A. Pitt man, Mrs. Lucille Mason, Mrs. Hazel Penley, Mrs. J. P. Bennett, Mrs. Baldie Moyer, Mrs. Vida Brooks and Mrs. Eller’s daughter Jean had arrived to hold a house warming shower for Mrs. Eller. The party with Mrs. Rector, Mrs. Edith Bennett, Mrs. Ensley and Mrs. J. P. Bennett acting as hostesses, was started by every one joining in Bible quiz, games and stories. Mrs. Eller then open ed her gifts of which there were many, both useful and attractive. Afterwards everyone visited and welcomed their old friend and j neighbor back while the hostesses served refreshments. Troopetles Meet. Airman 2nd Class Glenn G Brown Jr., recently returned from Hawaii where he has been sta tioned for the past 26 months with, the Air Corps. Mr. Brown ha received his discharge and after spending some time with his pat - ents at their home in Grovemont is taking a pleasure trip to Lr> Minster, Mass., to visit with rela tives. Mrs. Porter Ammons has re turned from a recent trip to Black Water, Va., where she visiteii with relatives. On her return trip she was accompanied by her niect Irene Orsborne who will remain a a guest at the Ammons’ home ft the summer months. They had won derful weather all the way. They spent some time in River Rouge Mich., visiting with Mr. and Mrs Linsey Howell. Mr. Howell wa the former pastor of the Free Wii Baptist church in Swannanoa. Dur ing the trip they also had a p - - nic lunch on Lake Erie and tried some northern fishing. They thoroughly enjoyed the vacation but were glad to get home Mr. and Mrs. Guy West and Mr. West’s mother Mrs. B. S. West left Saturday for a trip to Meri dian, Miss. Chief Chester Taylor and his wife, stationed at San Diago, were guests at Mr. Taylor’s parents home on the Craigmont road last week. Last Thursday the Chester Taylors and the G. R. Taylors, his parents, were dinner guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. M. C. Tay lor. Chief Taylor and his wife are now on their way to Buffalo, N. Y., to visit with Mrs. Taylor’s parents. Mr. and Mrs. Clinton Robertson and their three children traveled to Washington, D. C., last week to visit Mrs. Robertson's sister. Mrs. Russell Riddle traveled to Ohio for a 10-day vacation visit ing with friends and relatives. She stopped in the small town of Pio neer to visit with Mr. and Mrs. Frank Wilson and in Akron to visit Mr. and Mrs. George Bailey. Mrs. O. W.
