Mr. and Mrs. Seymour Vaughan of Ithaea, N. Y., visited Mr. and Mrs. Robert Kelley of Montreat last Wednesday. Mrs. Vaughan is the former Miss Emily Miller of Montreat. On Monday the Kel leys and their son Livingston vis ited Mrs. Charles W. Whitson in Old Fort. Mrs. Ernest Plemmons is at tending the School of Missions and Christian Service of the Woman’s Society of Christian Service at Pheiffer college, Misenheimer, this week. Mrs. Plemmons is a dele gate from the W.S.C.S. of the State Street Methodist church. Miss Ernestine Plemmons, accom panied by Miss Jewell Cogdill, drove Mrs. Plemmons to Misen heimer. Mr. and Mrs. W. K. Smith and son Kelly have returned to their home in Winter Park, Fla., after spending a week with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Craven of Ridgecrest. Another daughter and her family, Mr. and Mrs. S. R. Mohr and Nancy of Lakeland, Fla., arrived Wednesday to spend a week with the Cravens. The George W. Pressley family is returning to Cedar Falls, Iowa, after spending several months at Swannanoa, route 1. Mr. Pressley is with the U. S. Air Force in Cedar Falls. Mrs. R. E. Mumpower left Thursday (today) for Chapel Hill, Tenn., to spend 10-days visiting relatives. From there she will go to London, Ky., to resume her du ties as hostess at Sue Bennett col lege. The Rev. William Huie of Cor- ' bin, Ky., is spending two weeks on the Christian Assembly grounds. Mr. and Mrs. Shady Mitchell of Orlando, Fla., visited Mr. and ! Mrs. Walter A. Davis last Tuaa I lay. Allred in High Point. Miss Lila M. Corbett of Blui Ridge road was pleasantly sur prised Saturday. Aug. 20, wher the Rev. and Mrs. Charles Patter son, who were missionaries with her during her long period of ser vice in the Malay peninsula, visit ed her here. The Rev. and Mrs. Pattersor left Sunday afternoon for Lake Junaluska, then returned tc Bloomington, Ind., where he is ar associate minister at the First Methodist church, which serves the students at the University of Indiana. Pat Logan of Asheville spent several days last week with his grandmother Mrs. Bessie Carr. Mrs. T. W. Simpson, Betsy, Fovce Ann and Bobby of Green rille, S. C., visited Mr. and Mrs. 1. T. Simpson last Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. F. S. Cunningham visited Mr. and Mrs. D. T. Black veil and family in Shelby over die iveek-end. Last Friday night Dr. and Mrs. Herbert Daugherty, Mrs. 0. C. Golightly and family. Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Heiser and sons, Brent and Rickie, spent last week-end in Thomasville with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Jenk ins. Mrs. Herman Holdway is visit ing her daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. Don Espinoza in Seattle. Wash. She visited in Vancouver, British Columbia, before going to Seattle. Mr. and Mrs. Dick Brownlee and children Anne and Dickie were week-end visitors of Dr. and Mrs. Lee Butler at Swannanoa YA hos pital. Mr. Brownlee was former ly chief of special service at Oteen and Swannanoa hospitals. He now holds the same position with the Salisbury YA hospital. Dr. and Mrs. Vera Rogers stopped here while en route from Roanoke, Va., to Wilson, N. C., to visit the Walter A. Davis family. Dr. Rogers formerly served as pastor of the First Christian church in Roanoke for 10 years. He is now professor of Bible at Atlantic Christian college. Wilson, N. C. Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Phillips re cently returned from a two weeks’ trip to the Southwest, While in Dallas. Tex., they were guests of the Dean Willis family for a pic nic supper. The Willises are for mer residents of Black Mountain. Mrs. 0. C. Minatree of Nashville Tenn., is visiting her brother-in law and sister, Dr. and Mrs. Her bert Daugherty. Mr. Minatree will arrive Friday for a few days stay. The Daugherty’s son, Dan, has returned to St. Petersburg. Fla., after a few days visit here. Elaine Norton of Winston-Salem is spending a few days with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Norton Sr. Miss Laura Hillman of Cam bridge, Mass., is visiting her aunt Mrs. John Leeman at her home on the Cragmont road. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Singleton and daughters have moved here from Bryson City and are residing in Mrs. James Cox’s house, just off Montreal road. Mr. Singleton will serve as coach at Reynolds High school for the coming year. He is a former star at Western Carolina college and coach at Bry son City. Mrs. L. C. Smith spent the week end in Winston-Salem with her grandson and family, Mr. and Mrs. S. C. Merrill and Bobby. Mr. and Mrs. Worth Burgess and Becky, and Mr. and Mrs. Miles P. Flack spent last week at Myrtle Beach. Mrs. W. R. Bell Jr. of Delray Beach, Fla., is visiting her sister in-law, Mrs. H. W. Sanders and Mr. Sanders at Blue Ridge. Earnest Howard of Melrose, Fla. is visiting Mrs. George Wrenn and family. Jimmy Seaw’right has returned to Caswell Training school, Kins ton, after spending several weeks with his mother, Mrs. Richard Sea wright. BARTLETT The Women’s Missionary socie ty of Kerlee Baptist church met at the home of Mrs. Cordie Bart lett on Aug. 19. Prayer and scrip ture verses from Deuteronomy, proverbs and Ephesians began the meetnig. The hymns “Whet I Survey the Wondrous Cross" wa used. Mrs. Lee Kerlee, secretary, read the monthly report. The interesting program. A Sure Road to National Downfall was brought by Mrs. Albert Hol combe and Mrs. O. V. Surrett. A business and social hour was en joyed ending the program. The Eugene Byrds had a nice auting at the Recreation Park last Thursday afternoon with Mrs. Mae Burnette as guest. Little “Jackie" surely did enjoy riding the devices. Mrs. Byrd’s sister, Miss Anne Hallman’ of Hopewell, Va., was week-end guest of the Byrds as were Mr. and Mrs. Donald Mc Cracken of Rutherfordton, N. C. Dr. and Mrs. B. L. Hallman and small daughter of Atlanta were to visit the Byrds this Monday. We attended the Black Moun tain Garden club meeting at the immunity club house last Friday night. The meeting was prefaced by one of our luscious covered dish suppers. We had a session of questions and answers later, and made plans for the coming year. We offer deepest sympathy to :he McIntosh family. Cordie Bartlett, boss in the Bea ton card room, has just returned 'rom his vacation. Our overseer ’aul Wagner took his vacation iome weeks ago. Mr. and Mrs. Carroll Walker and hildren of Washington, D. C., ami drnest Walker of Beaver Lake 'isited Mrs. Julius A. Walker last rhursday. Don Walker of Miami, •'la., visited Mrs. Walker recently. Hama had some small skin can ers removed last week. Bobby Hare and Clara Moore of Chester, S. C., had supper with is last Saturday evening. They ilso visited the Eugene Byrds and Jlyde Grays briefly. This lovely •oung couple plan to get married tear Christmas time, and have iromised to spend their honev noon with us at Dream’s End. We went to East Marion late Saturday to visit the Joe Bruners. They were gone to South Carolina ;o a singing so we went to bed md did all the visiting Sunday noming. After partaking of one af Polly’s delicious dinners we ?ame home, pausing briefly with ;he Pink Lewises of Old Fort where we saw Mr. and Mrs. John Bruner if Marion. The empty auger hole that 1 was telling you of last week has seen plugged up. I have accepted the position of director of music in a new, and we hope progres sive church, namely the Lakewood Baptist church, we named it this because we hope to eventually ouild in Lakewood if we can get a suitable site. We feel that a :hurch is needed here. Owing to Mrs. Alice Coburn’s gracious gen srosity we are going to have ser vices this winter in one of Camp Merri-Mac’s spacious buildings. There will be Sunday school at 1(L and preaching at 11 o’clock this coming Sunday morning. We would love for you to come and worship with us, but want no fool ishness—this is serious business At a meeting late last Sunday afternoon between 30 and 40 of us i oted to take ourselves hence from the old Mountain View church and start a new church, thereby giv ing the old vine a better chance to grow from the pruning, and get ting a place where our own flock :ould “break their bread with gladness." In less time than it takes to te.l it we had organized as a church, called the Rev. Eugene Byrd as pastor, and elected a full slate of officers.
