What do you think? HKALTH.—Gov. Luther Hodges says he s going to behave himself a little better from now on. We had a long item about him hen- last week and referred to ed itorials which have been written advising the governor to take it easy. Last Thursday—on the same day our column comes out in a lot i of papers -reporters at the press conlerenee heard the governor tell of linding a framed editorial on nis plane _ when he boarded it in Asheville Thursday morning. The editorial was to the effect that the ■ oil should not work its governor .00 hard. ‘1 think it’s good they’re sny >B it. It’s guod advice—and I’m ». ig to take it.” said Gov. Hodges. HOW’S THAT AGAIN, KERR? enator W. Kerr Scott has clone ■lore than ail'’ other living man to I ;> ill North Carolina out of the mud. He did it with a multi-mil ■ . .on-dollar bond progra .1 which the ’ilc .. '.opted overwhelmingly in i 1949. This road program has probably i meant more to North Carolina i than any other one thing we have done in the past 20 years. Had it not been tor llo.uing bonds, we could never have accomplished it. These 12,000 miles of rural roads ■vi'l be paid for in 1969. Last week somebody asked Kerr •Scott about the administration’s proposed $40 billion bond program ’or new highways- about the pro ject which could mean as much to ...- nation as Kerr Scott’s program a to the state. He said—or was quoted as say i.g and hasn’t denied it—-he was .gainst the program. It is not needed, he staled, “for roads that •.v'll be worn out by the time we i pay .or them.” Our state roads may be worn out by the time we get them paid for in 1969, but they are out there -thanks to a Scott who wasn't afraid of bond programs in 1949 -and it is u to the state to keep them in good condition. Cham oer of Commerce Executives asso cmtion, visited the governor, the -V C. Citizens association, and two or three other offices here to feel out sentiment regarding a State Cnamber of Commerce. The report of their findings may not be available for some time yet, >ut they came away from the Ra leigh meetings with advice that the services which a State Cham ber of Commerce would perform : re already be ng rendered by sev eral agencies and organizations al ready in existence and doing a pretty good job. Chief result of their visits here could be a recommendation to the governor, to the 1957 Legislature, or to both, that the N. C. Dept, of Conservation and Development be strengthened and perhaps be di vorced in some way from politics —or changes brought on by poli tics. That s a hard—if not impossible —dose to swallow. But the cham ber of commerce executives are sincere in their efforts. They feel that a good job is being done by the Dept, of Conservation and De velopment, but consensus seemed to be that it needs streamlining and more independence. Those on the Raleigh visit were Dozier, Glenn Taylor of Albemarle, and James Glenn of Charlotte. HAYFEVER: A lot has been written in this column in the past few years regarding hayfever.
