DIAL 4311 CALVIN, JOHNSON— From Page 1 creek bed. The time was 2:15 in the afternoon. On Saturday morning the same party returned to the search, could not obtain a boat, but an owner said they could have one if they would bail out the water. Cavin, and Johnson did this and then pushed the craft off the sand. They returned to the scene, loaded their equipment, and, joined by Slagle, left the pier at approxi mately 1:20 p.m. Fifty minutes later they recovered the second body, that of Jimmy Israel, 19. He was found on the south side >f the walls of the lake, believed o be in the old road bed, 150 eet from the spot where the body >f Waldrop was found. "Although the navy divers were earching all over, that end of the ake, we stuck to our spot because f the lay of the land, the di tction of the wind at the time te accident occurred, and our nowledge of the undercurrent of le water,” Mr. Cavin said. Mr. Cavin believes that the tird body may be in the vicinity [ the place where the other two ere found. He bases this on the act that the sweatshirt and under lirt of the missing man were >und on the bank, two feet from le water’s edge, and appeared to ave been tom off and thrown to lore. This would indicate that le missing youth had gone to le rescue of his companions or ad started to swim to the point iter they had been lost. That iea covers a lot of water. The missing boy is Larry Moore, 6. The search for his body is cntinuing. All three were from '• hitney, S. C. When the teenager first became interested in the firefly as a pos sible project, he wrote to Ur. Wil liam D. McElroy of Johns Hop kins University, who suggested he collect eggs from females. By trial-and-error methods, young Edmunds managed to cap ture females in the field that laid eggs—but he couldn’t get them to hatch. Later he found out Dr. McElroy was having the same problem try ing to raise them under laboratory conditions. In case you want to catch female fireflies, here’s how you might proceed: The boy learned the female of the species climbs atop a blade of grass and flashes light signals to the male — and after “light” talk has been exchanged, he usually ' comes in on the beam. ' "Like in navigation,” the stu i dent explained. Well, Edmunds learned to imi tate the male calls with a flash light. Using a stopwatch he timed his signals at 5.8-second intervals. During the summer he borrowed a microscope from the high school’s Science club and daily recorded his findings. He’s still working on the project. But the youthful scientist is too n r nquisitive to content himself with ust one series of experimentations. Edmunds is participating in the cience club's study of Peninsula oil and has not deserted his leaf ollection. I-ast year he headed the croup’s work on the “Bee which ,vas exhibited at William and Mary ind Madison colleges. The senior stands high in his ■'lass and has been on the Nelms honor scroll several times. He is president of the Second Presby terian Church’s Youth Fellowship. An all-around student, he’s on the French club’s executive bourd and is one of the senior band’s secretaries. Trombonist with the band, he has three music letters and last year made the All-State Band. Leland will join other top-rank ing finalists March 1 to take part in the five-day Science Talent In stitute where winners will be se lected and the covered science scholarships awarded. M. Y. F.
