Sh.rp, Chairman Creative Writing Group THE JUDAS TREE I am the redbud; I unfold My crimson blossoms, bright and bold, I nto the Spring, unto the sun. I am alone, the only one In all the forest who must sigh W hen Spring has come and Easter’s nigh. I am the one who must regret The sin the world will not forget. He came in springtime like this Spring Muttering low, “I killed my King. I cannot live. Oh, let me die!” I pon this branch with one harsh cry He took his life. His sinful blood Flowed crimson as each shame stained bud. And each spring, waking from its sleep. The forest sings, but I must weep. —Barbara Ann Ayers, High Point college. “The Judas Tree” was given the Virginia Ware prize by the Poetry Council of N. C. in 1955. Anne K.
