When F. P. Higginbotham at

inside. There in letters big as
life was stamped the name of a
well known store in downtown
Black Mountain. This convinced
him that it was his hat but he
still couldn’t believe that this
''thing” he held could be his
chapeau. ‘‘But how,” he reasoned,
"if it isn't my hat, did that guy
in Spartanburg get hold of a hat
from Black Mountain?”
While this was going on Max
Willis and other Southern em
ployees had been standing around
wanting to laugh but afraid of
giving away the joke.
The joke was that Mr. Willis
had opened the package, taken the
hat out and replaced it with one
borrowed from W. W. Earley. Just
as Mr. Higginbotham reached the
end of his patience the boys walk
ed in with his hat. Although he
threatened to get even he was
so glad to get it back that he
promptlv forgave them.
