NICHOLS 4th QUARTER RALLY— From Page 1 The Owen center had help on all of these from four of the best ball hawks in the county, Bridges and Luckadoo, and Redmond and Richardson who kept feeding the ball into the right place. THIRD QUARTER This was all Valley Springs and the play of the Panthers showed the results of some excellent coach ing by their coach. Max Rhodes. By holding Gardner scoreless the losers whittled the Owen lead to two points. Here's how it hap pened. 29-22 29--24 29-26 31—26 Luckadoo gave the Owen fans their first cause for cheering during the per iod 31-27 31-29 31-30 4‘36” to go. This was a great piece of teamwork and brought cheers from the fans, es pecially those from Owen 37-33 37-35 Coach Ned Straehla and all Owen fans were glad to see this quarter end. FOURTH QUARTER: The crowd was sitting on the edge of the seats as the fourth quarter opened. The Warhorses were close to losing Gardner and Bridges on personals and Bridges did foul out in the closing seconds. But the Owen team shifted its tactics and went on to victory. Play by play it happened this way. 39-35 Gardner dribbled around and put the egg in the basket with little effort 39 -37 40 -37 Richardson was as cool as an arctic night as he sank both free throws 41 -37 43-37 Gardner 43-38 45 -38 Gardner, rebound with one hand. Valley Springs called time out with 4’ 01” left to play. 46 -38 Gardner was fouled and made both shots. (m7c) REFLECTIONS— From Page 1 to have many pleasant evenings of basketball ahead. —R— Attending the tournament con vinced me more than ever that I'd never be a referee. Those fellows take a mental beating that must be terrific. Watching them you often wonder why on earth they do it. They can't need money that much. Although they call them as they see them, and few actually believe that they are the four eyed monsters, crooks, or rob bers that they are called during the heat of a game, the referees, as a group, probably take more booing and verbal abuse than any other group of officials. It seems to be human nature to boo the referee. Some express the opinion that the boys with the whistles need more school ing and training, but this seems to have little effect. Whether . it is the Buncombe county tourn ament, the Atlantic Coast con ference, the Big 10, or a state i tournament the boys who call them come in for their share of catcalls. f A few years ago the situation became so much out of hand at one large university that the other members of the conference threatened to drop them from the schedule and the booking office cut off the officials. Since it is human nature to want to string up the referee. I must admit that I have never been more human in my life than I was when they sent ev erybody's favorite guard, Wanda Bartlett, to the showers Friday evening. My human nature stood out like a sore thumb, too, when they called three personals on Tony Gardner in the first half Saturday night. It's a good thing that they never make a recording of what’s said at those games. I’d hate to hear my part played back. Since 1 did disagree with the decisions of the duly elected and assigned officials, I have decided to impose a penalty on myself foe- a cooling off period. 1 am prohibited from attending a basketball game in which the Owen teams participate for a period of six months. That’ll teach me not to disagree with the decision of the judges. —R— The refs called 43 fouls in the girls' consolation game between North Buncombe and Valley Springs Saturday night. That’s what I call blowing your own whis tle. —R— Ralph Singleton, Reynolds High school coach, called the shots right when he picked Owen to take the boys’ title. Ralph will have many of his first team hack for another year of football this fall and is ex pecting a good season. Singleton, who starred at Western Carolina college, be lieves that the Buncombe county teams will be able to hold their own against Hendersonville, Waynesville, and Canton withito two or three years. —R— I’ll bet you didn’t know that Mrs. Margaret Cook was a star at Asheville High school a few years back, was captain of the team. This was the day of the bloomer girls. Mrs. Cook’s name was Margaret Brian and this posed quite a prob lem for the newspaper people. ’I Parents! Invest in your Chil dren's future today.
