E. Gardner This question continues to bob . up. “My figs never mature. The - fruit forms hut always drops off.” • I believe I have answered this question before but it will stand K repeating because I have just read s »n interesting report from Cali fornia. If your figs never mature, it is almost certain that you have a plant of the Smyrna type which requires a special type of polleni zation. The Smyrna fig is com monly referred to as the fig of commerce and California produces about 00 per cent of the dried figs we buy in our stores. So, if you have a fig plant which is misbe having in the manner described, re place it with Brown Turkey, Ce leste or Brunswick, unless it is needed for ornamental purposes. Now let us consider the inter esting love life of the Smyrna type fig. As already mentioned, it requires a special type of pol lenization. The pollen comes from the male Capri-fig which never becomes edible. This process is accomplished through the coopera tion of a small female fig wasp called Blastophoga. Leaving the male or Caprifig, she becomes covered with pollen which she car ries to the Smyrna type. Time was when male fig plants were set in the fig orchards to provide pollen. However, this re duced the number of bearing plants and also the tonnage of figs per acre. Neither was there any assurance that the wasp would not pass up the Smyrna, or female f fig, in favor of another male fig. ^ Dr. R. M. Warner solved the ’ whole problem by importing sec f ond crop male figs from outside ( the orchard. These wasp contain r ing figs were put in paper bags and hung on every tree in the pro ducing orchard. The wasps soon t hatch and leave the bag, through r holes in the bottom, and enter the 1 “eye” of the nearby female fig. t She would prefer another male fig because her egg laying apparatus tote.
