About 10 of these were in the group which moved up to high school level this Fall from elementary schools in the two school districts which are served by this consolidated high school. In addition to capacity classes in the 23 regular classrooms at Owen, classes are being held in cafeteria, library, gymnasium and band room. This doubling up on use of facilities was necessary to en able all groups to meet for reg ular studies under direction of a staff of 29 teachers. Mr Shuford said. Increase in the number of new comers to the community accounts also in large part for a sharp increase this year in enrollment at the Black Mountain Elementary school. A G. Burchfiel, new prin cipal who assumed the post this year, reported. Thirty-five new pupils this year place its total en rollment. in grades 4 through 8. at a total of 721—with all class room- being in use under direction of a teaching staff of 22 headed by Mr Burchfiel. Hope was ex pressed that an additional teacher may be acquired in line with eli gibility regulations governed by high enrollment. At the Black Mountain Primary school, headed by Principal Leon ard 1 Keever. there are a num ber of children of newcomers to the community, but a decrease in the overall total number of pupil entering school for the first time A marked increase in such enroll ments is anticipated next year, and this trend is expected to continue upward throughout the county for the 1958 59 school year. Mr Keever . said. A slight decrease in enrollments thi> year at the first urade level was also indicated at the Swan nanoa Elementary school of which E. N. Howell is principal, but in the higher levels increases jumped total enrollment to 984. an increase of 20 students over last year, in cluding a number of new residents m that area. Twenty-nine teach ers and a librarian make up the stall. Hope was expressed that one new teacher may be secured 0 replace a loss 0f one member 01 the staff la?t year.
