If this is to he accom plished, the theater must belong to the community and to its people. The theatre must be yours as well as ours, and it must be guided by your interest and approval. There are, of course, many reasons why we want to come to Black Moun tain, but this is our first desire to give to and become a part of the community by being a part of its business enterprise and by con tributing a unique facet of its cultu re! “Another thing we had to decide was, ‘What plays will give the community the most enjoyment for the first season?' We believe we have selected a schedule which will be very enjoyable and entertain ing. ‘Tn recent years arena staging has dominated the new innova tions in both New York and sum mer stock theatre. G, 13, 20, 27, 1958 (where the 'audience is seated on three or four sides of an acting area) was standardized as a tech nique by the University of Wash ington, and has since then grown into one of the principal modes of theatrical expression. Especially significant has been its use in the summer musical theater tent de veloped by St. John Terrell. Among its advantages are the freedom and naturalness it offers the actor and director, the opportunity for new and imaginative scene design and lighting, and the intimacy it offers between the actor and the audience. We have chosen arena staging because it offers a novel and fresh approach to theater both aesthetically and practically for this area. “The three of us are not new to the theater, despite our relative youth in years. Among the three of us, we have worked in every phase of the professional theater, both in New York and in summer stock, including management, pro duction, direction and acting. Be sides what we feel will be the pop ularity of our program and the ideal location of the theater, we know that we will have a vigorous and knowing management able to assemble a fine production staff and acting company. The com pany will be a young one, fresh in scope, imaginative in ideas, boundless in energy to carry forth those ideas, so that the produc tions will have every chance to re flect theater at its most creative pinnacle. “We would very much welcome any inquiries, suggestions or com munications you may have. You can reach us by writing to us at 209 East 10th Street, New York ,2, New York. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank you for your interest. We shall look forward to hearing from you,” the announcement concluded. Koinonia Sends Representative To This Area On Tour Visiting colleges, churches, civic groups and schools of this area, Mi's.
