Tea & Topic Club Hears of Founding The Tea and Topic club held its regular business and literary meeting Monday night, Feb. 10, at the home of Mrs. R. T. Greene. Mrs. B. G. Rvron presided. It was announced that the club will chaperone the teen-age dance at the clubhouse on Feb. 17. The club voted to make a con tribution to the March of Dimes and the Heart fund. Members also voted to sponsor Girl Scout troop 89 again this year. Mrs. Richard Oulahan presented the program on the history of the club from its organization and the first meeting in the fall of 1936 up to the present. She reviewed both civic and social activities of the club. * Four charter members who are still in the club were presented corsages by Mrs. Oulahan. They are Mrs. Greene, the first presi dent, Mrs. Allen Perley III, Mi’s. Otty Leeman and Mrs. A. F. Ty son, Jr. A social hour followed the meeting. They also gain experience in filing cards, typing out book orders, accession ing and preparing new books, and being able to follow instructions. The last class of the day counts the cards of the books checked out that day and files them according to classification. Those students who wish to take library science have to he ap proved by the librarian and the principal. Those taking this course this year are: First period: Dennis Glass, Shirley Byrd, and Jewel Stroud; second period: Bobby Am mons, Arthur Clayton, and Brenda Perkins; third period: Betty Kit chen, Claudia Law, and Terry Swann; fourth period: Francis Banks, Phyllis Pruitt. Carole Wat kins, and Jean Waycaster: fifth period: Elaine Bastarache, Chris tine Hart, and Joyce Martin. Now let us turn the spotlight m the lady who is greatly responsi ble for much of the above, Mrs, Carr, the school librarian. Mr-. Carr, who is from Chicago, 111., originally taught foreign lang uages, having received her A.I!, in French and Latin from North western university. She has also done quite a bit of graduate work at the University of Georgia and Appalachian State Teachers col leg,. to mention a few. Mrs. Carr taught French, Latin, German and Spanish, until she won a state scholarship for library training. She has taught for about 15 years, most of which was spent at Swannanoa and Black Moun tain High schools. Before com ing here she taught in Georgia and Des Moines, la., where she grad uated from high school. She and her husband, who is a retired con ductor of Soutern railways, are now living at Oteen. Mrs. Carr has two sons. One is a priest at an Episcopal church in Cam bridge, Mass., and the other a chemist in Richmond, Va. At Owen Mrs, Gan is a junior sponsor and also is in charge of the annual Junior class magazine drive. Outside school she is very active in church work and in the Red Cross as a Gray Lady. Her most interesting hobby i traveling, which has stemmed from her interest in foreign languages. She has been in 14 European coun tries, ranging from Norway to Italy. One of the most interest ing things she saw on this trip was tin- midnight sunrise ovei the Arctic circle. She has also trav eled in the Caribbean and been to Canada. Members of the Professional Photographer.- of America, Inc., served as judges in the contest. 30,444 Drivers Lose License In a summary of license revok able traffic offenses, the Motor Vehicles department said today that .'10,444 motorists lost their legal driving privileges during 1957. Meek and neck at the.top of the list were 11,905 drunk drivers and 11,804 speeders, the agency re ported. Both offenses require a manda tory surrender of drivers’ license. Miscellaneous violations noted in the annual report bowed reck less driving. 1799 convictions; im proper use of operator’s license, 489; transporting intoxicants, 359; and larceny of automobile, 207. Additional penalties were pre scribed for 107M motorists caught driving after their license had been withdrawn, the department said. G. T.
