Two Christmases ago two fam ilies that resided across the country from one another—Maine and California — exchanged gifts. The lady in Maine opened hers first, because of the difference in time, and almost passed out be yond redemption when she saw that the package contained a Lazy Susan. At first she couldn't believe her eyes and turned the article over and over to make certain that her sister-in-law on the West Coast hadn't returned her gift by mis take. Because she had shopped very carefully to find just the right gift—a Lazy Susan. The next Christmas rolled around and found the two families living much closer together, and this time each resolved that there would be no repetition of the event of the year before. Just to make certain, one went east and the other west to shop. Came Christmas morning — the first opened the gift—inside she found a cookie jar. Again she looked it over carefully to see if her gift had been returned by mistake. What had she bought for her inlaws?. You guessed it. An identical cookie jar. Next year they haven't decided how they’ll manage but if the same item shows up again, both families are going to start believ ing in black magic. They are probably starting now NOT to think about gifts for the other while any member of the family is around. Will let you know next Christ mas how it works. SHOPE CREEK Mrs. Thelma Buckner Old man winter in all his glory truly reigned supreme, with the wonder and magic of snow spread abroad in the land. The air was filled with ghostly music as the wind ripped off the covering of buildings and moaned in the tall, swaying trees. The evergreen trees were superlative in their mantle of white. We get our water from a stream that meanders aimlessly down from the mountain. 1 had to use the axe to chop away the pyramids of ice that formed at the mouth of the pipe in order to catch the wat er. The formations of ice were exquisite where they caught prisms of sunlight. We had nine inches of snow, and 1 quote: “Snow is awful pretty stuff on mansion or on hovel, But snow is pretty awful stuff when I’m behind the shovel.” Our thermometer indicated two degrees below zero, which brought misty plumes of breath in the fros ty air. Miss Peggy Burleson of West Asheville became the bride of Wil bur G. Creasman of Asheville, route 2, on Feb. 1 at Waynesville. The ceremony was performed by J. J. Fergeson. They were our guests for dinner on Sunday, also Mrs. G. R. Creasman, Ronnie and Cathy King and Patricia and Kar en Chastine. Terry Bartlett underwent minor surgery on Friday morning. He had a tonsillectomy operation. He is doing nicely at home. The W. M. S. of Berea Baptist church met at the home of Mrs. Henry Ingle, Jr., on Wednesday evening, Feb. 19, with seven mem bers present. Mrs. H. C. Creas man had charge of the program in the “Royal Service” which was on the work among the Jews. During the social hour Mrs. Ingle served pineapple marshmallow cream pie, coffee and hot chocolate. Mr. and Mrs. Thad Gregg of Flint, Mich., are here. Berea Baptist church was host to the Men’s club at a supper giv en on Tuesday night, Feb. 4, at the church with 37 attending. Porter, of the Ashe ville Veterans Administration of fice in the City Building, an nounced today. The dividends will be paid as near as possible to the anniversary date of each policy during calen dar year 1958. For example, if a policy was issued any June 1, the anniversary date will be June 1, 1958. The dividend declarations do not include the non-participating post Korea type of GI insurance since the law makes no provision for di vidend payments on those policies. Black Mountain, N. c DIAL NO-9-4381 The two dividend declaration* are: 1. National Service Life Insur ance (NSLI), which originated in World War II, $240,000,000 pay able to approximately $5,000,000 policyholders. 2. U. S. Government Life In surance (USGLI), which originat ed in World War I, $22,000,000, payable to approximately .'100,000 policyholders. Dividends will be paid to both term and permanent policyhold ers. The NSLI declaration of $240, 000,000 is approximately $30,000, 000 greater than the amount dis tributed in 1957, but individual policyholders will not necessarily receive more in 1958 than in 1957. Generally speaking, Porter said, they should receive about the same. The $30,000,000 NSLI increase came about when approximately 400,000 policyholders in military service cancelled their in-service premium waivers and resumed premium payments thus estab lishing eligibility. Concerning the USGLI tegular annual dividend of $22,000,000, Porter said permanent plan poli cyholders will receive approxi mately the same amount in 1958 as in 1957. Term USGLI policyholders may receive slightly higher dividends in 1958, because, among other fac tors. the mortality and disability experience for this group is be coming more favorable, Porter said.
