Those against the measure re mind that the parkway has already been paid for. However, other local residents expressed the op inion that toll charges on the Parkway would mean more motor ists would travel other highways and hence would be more likely to make stop-overs here. Leading this community in voic ing opposition to such tolls was the president of the Black Moun tain Chamber of Commerce, Wil liam H. McMurray, Jr., who ex pressed his belief “'The Parkway should be free all the way.” He added: “We pay taxes, and gov ernment funds paid to build the parkway. We shouldn’t pay for it twice,” he said. Aaron F. Belt, president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, also expressed disapproval of the pro posed toll charge. H. McGuire Wood, immediate past president of the Chamber of Commerce, reminded, “No one likes to pay a toll for anything. It would probably bring more busi ness to Black Mountain and vicin ity if we did have a small toll on the Parkway,” he explained, "for undoubtedly many motorists would travel this way instead of by the parkway if a charge is im posed. It would be better to pay a small toll and to have assurance that concessions and accomoda tions would not be built on the Parkway,” Mr. Wood added, ex plaining “in this way accomoda tions on the Parkway would not detract from those we can offer locally to tourists.” Mr. Belt, in opposing the meas ure, stated his belief, "Our beau tiful mountains should not have a price placed on them for visit ors. There should be no charge to anyone, though of eourse there are maintenance requirements. But the taxpayers have paid and ev erybody should travel free.” The National Park Service an nounced last week it will charge tolls on the parkway in North Carolina and Virginia beginning June 1.. Within hours, Rep. George Shuford (D-N. C.) intro duced a bill in Congress to pre vent the action. Rep. Shuford's stand was out Thank You We ivish to express our sincere appreciation to all our custom ers for being so patient and con siderate during the recent cold wave. -NOTICE WE ARE NOW IN A POSITION TO TAKE CARE OF ALL YOUR FUEL OIL NEEDS PROMPTLY. VIVERETTE OIL SERVICE DIAL NO 9-4952 107 West State Black Mountain, N. C. lined in a telegram to the Black Mountain News last Thursday in which he stated: “I was informed this morning >y the National Park Service that it would start June 1, 1958, a toll system on the Blue Ridge park way. As I have stated many Limes before, I am unalterably op posed to the imposition of a •harge for the use of the park way. I introduced today legis ation which will provide that the Blue Ridge parkway shall remain :oll free. I will press for its ear y favorable passage. In discuss ng the controversy with Parks Director Conrad Wirth this morn ing, I requested of him that the North Carolina Congressional del sgation meet with Secretary of .he Interior Fred Seaton at the ’arliest possible date to voice our .manimous opposition to the park service’s decision and to ask him to rescind the order,’’ Rep. Shu ford’s message said. At the request of Sen. W. Kerr Scott, the Senate Interior Com mittee has begun an investigation of the proposed plan to collect tolls from motorists who travel the Blue Ridge Parkway. The U. S. Park Service an nounced that proposed fees for private autos would be $1 for a 1-5 day permit to travel on the parkway, and $2 for an annual permit. Higher rates would be charged commercial vehicles. Tn asking Sen. James Murray (D-Mont.), Chairman of the Sen ate Interior committee for an in vestigation of the proposed plans, Scott said: “If the Park Service is allowed to carry through with this pro posed action, serious damage would be done to the Blue Ridge Park way as a vita] segment of North Carolina’s tourist industry and as one of the Nation’s most popular scenic attractions.” Scott said the Parkway was never intended to become a ‘‘com mercial enterprise.” He said, ‘‘It would be a crying shame to convert this masterpiece of nature into a commercial ex pressway by invoking a system of tolls on motor vehicles using it.” In a letter to Senator Scott, Chairman Murray said: “As requested by you, 1 have already directed the staff to start a preliminary investigation of this proposed action.” LOWEST PRICE EVER! (j!2tfc) REFLECTIONS— From Page 1 requesting permission to bring a dog along, brought this reply fron the motel owner: "We have never had a dog fa) asleep in bed while smoking anc burn everything up. We have nev er had a dog spill alcoholic drinkf all over the furniture and ruir it. We have never caught a dug leaving the premises with a bath towel or a pillow case in his suit case. Sure the dog is welcome. "P. S. If you can get the dog to vouch for you, you can oorat too.’’ R— Some of the most interesting items never appear in the pa per at all. 1 caught Oden Walk er throwing away part of his copy this week—he said he did n't like—and salvaged it for his reading public. Here's the item that was tossed aside: One sees strange things in a daily paper, as well as weeklies. Several weeks ago while 1 was looking at a picture of all these crazy bottles in the house in New > ork whose caps jumped off, and other unusual things, some thing drew my gaze across the page, and there was tht. like ness of our beloved skinny ed itor. I quickly read the item, for with all the hold-ups and such it caused me to wonder what ye reduced one had Rot ten into. Imagine my surprise when I learned that he was fix ing to leap into politics. Well, as my brother used to say, “his head might be made for public office, but we can't be sure his posterior will fit the chair." Maybe he shouldnt have re duces!. I was talking to him recently and he didn't seem sure whether he would wind up in Raleigh or Washington. They have made a new display plat form in the window at the News office—they say it is to display office supplies, but 1 believe ye fat one will sit in this place a few days before election so the \olcrs can see what they are getting. He will look snazzy sitting there with a derby hat cradled in his arm, and "Honest Jack" emblazoned on the win dow. Seriously, let’s vote for Jack—at least he has a sense of humor. (Cut this if you feel like it, fellow). (Kd. note: 1 don't feel like it.)
