Montreal Resident Gets Letter from Koreo in Response to Her (ARE Gift ... r a i INSIDE OUT FOR JOY—These Korean tots were too eager to try on properly the new underwear they received from CARE. “Long Johns" were among $1,400 worth of food, clothing, tools and books delivered to the Chong Ae Won Leprosarium through donations to the overseas relief agency by American individuals and groups. Mrs. L. H. i-oley, Assenioiy mn, Montreat, has received a personal thank-you from South Korea for her gift of food through CARE. In a letter from Chong Ju, Mrs. Foley learned that her $5 package has been delivered to the Chong Ae Won Leprosarium for adults and children. “We were somewhat of the ‘Or phan Annie’ variety,” reads the letter, written for the recipients by Dr. Rolf von Scorebrand, an American government employee in Korea. “We know,” .he told Mrs. Foley, “now that we have some friends in distant lands, your thoughts will give us courage and endurance.” Chong Ae Won means a settle ment of “Clear Vision and Love.” Ten years ago, according to the letter, it was a “miserable place,'’ with a few discarded army tents and scraps of food. Today there are houses, roads, wells, a dispen sary and combination cnurcn and sehoolhouse. The goal for 1958 is a separate school with dormi tory. Other CARE packages delivered to Chong Ae Won, through con tributions from all parts of the U. S., included books, woolen suit ing, school supplies, cotton goods, knitting machines, children’s shoes and underwear and carpenters’ kits. Black Mountain is located on US auto Route No. 70. Toward the west this is a 3-lane concrete road to the city of Asheville (15 miles), whence several main highways lead to Knoxville, Cincinnati and all points west. Toward the east, a 4-lane limited access highway leads to Washington and New York. NC Route No. 9 south from Black Mountain leads to Carolina beaches, Augusta and Florida. Page was one of 91 boys who at tended the camp which was spon sored by the Champion Paper and Fibre company and three other North Carolina member mills of the Southern Pulpwood Conserva tion association. The group of campers included 19 from the west ern North Carolina area. Among the experienced technical foresters who served as instructors and counselors at the camp were Max M. Dillingham and Lewis Herron, Conservation Foresters of the Carolina Division of Champ ion. The camp provided a full week of forestry instruction with em phasis on learning-by-doing. Dis cussions were augmented by act ual practice on the part of the boys in the various forestry operations. Subjects studied, demonstrated and engaged in by the groups included forest fire prevention and sup pression, forest management, for est utilization, insect and disease control, tree identification and timber estimating. The campers were selected from their home counties for the priv ilege of attending the camp, and the entire week’s activities were designated to train the farm boys —many of whom will in the future own timberland—in methods of profitable management. Oh, what amiss may I forgive in Thee, Jesus, thou good Paragon, thou Crystal Christ?” In his poem entitled "The Crys tal,” Sidney Lanier contrasts Christ with all the great and good of history. In Shakespeare he finds much to forgive. In Homer and Socrates there is something to for give. “So, Buddha, beautiful, I pardon thee That the All thou hast for needy man Was nothing; and thy Best of be ing was But not to be.” In Dante, Milton, Lucretius, j Kempis, Epictetus, Emerson, Keats and Tennyson, there is something to forgive. But when he turns to jesus, he sees nothing to forgive: “Lanier’s vision of the Christ was as clear in the gloom of sorrow as in the gleam of nature’s glor ies." wrote Rev. A. C. Dixon in his "Sidney Lanier,” The Johns Hop- j kins' Poet.” Dr. A. C. Dixon, father of our j own Mrs. Clara Dixon (Frank j Howard) Richardson, was pastor of the University Baptist church, New York City, and later preached | in the “Tabernacle” in London. He j and Dr. Chas. Alexander, noted j singer, held evangelistic services throughout England and Scotland. This excerpt is by courtesy of Mrs. F. H.
