i binds them to a drab, adventureles
world. Miss Gonzales gave galvani;

. Laura is a haunting, shadowy bu
realistic vignette of a tragic’littl
s figure hopelessly caught up in th
r inadequacies of her own limit;
e tions and environment. The tim
e is in the “lightning” period of wa
'lme rind depression years. M
s Williams, both as narrator and £
e son of the Wingfield family, reall
k illuminated the “moments (
truth" and "candles of hope” author
Williams sought to point up. The
entire quartet of Silo Circle mem
bers who appear this week give a
consistently intelligent and sym
pathetic portrayal of the four lives
which seemed doomed to pass in
a little world void of adventure
and motion.
Whether or not you find hap
py ending for “The Glass Menag
erie” is up to you. Tennessee
Williams, as usual, has not dia
grammed his denouement with def
initive strokes.
The pace of the current play is
itself a good foil for the rapid-fire
mood of previous offerings by the
Silo group. The settings are, as
usual, simple and effective. The
“candle-lit, memory play” quality
of the presentation is effectively
limned in lighting effects, cos
tumes. and properties. The effect
of the whole might even be said
to extend to the new painting ex
hibition being offered at the play
house in a one-man show by Black
Mountain's James Heaton. (In
fact, that is approximately what
several play goers did say—in com
ments which saw these paintings
as almost in echo of the colorful,
glass-like clarity achieved in the
play itself.)
Next week’s play is to provide
further varied fare. It will be a
mystery drama, "A Murder Has
Been Arranged”.
