“THE BALLAD OF THE TREES
AND THE MASTER”
“Into the woods my Master went,
Clean forspent, forspent;
Tnto the woods my Master came,
Forspent with love and shame.
But the olives, they were not blind
to him,
The little grey leaves were kind to
Him;
The thorn-tree had a mind to Him,
When into the woods He came.
“Out of the woods my Master went,
And He was well content.
Out of the woods my Master came,
Content with death and shame.
When death and shame would woo
Him last,
From under the trees they drew
him last.
’Twas on a tree they slew Him
last.
When out of the woods He came.”
—Sidney Lanier.
Lanier had learned the mean
ing of the words of Jesus, “and I,
if I be lifted up, will draw all
men unto me, and this He said sig
nifying what death He should die.”
The basis of Sidney Lanier’s
character and work, as musician,
poet, and teacher, was his faith
in God; and he was the man that
he was, the musician that he was,
and the poet that he was, because
he was the Christian that he was.
The sense of God was ever with
him, and with clear vision he saw
God in Christ. Before a stupend
ous task for which he did not feel
equal, he consoled himself with the
thought that “God is great.”
These comments are from Dr. A.
C. Dixon’s booklet on Lanier, giv
en by courtesy of Mrs. Frank How
ard Richardson.
