Host to Visitors
Three guests and one new mem
ber, Mrs. Janies Day, were among
those attending a meeting' of the
Black Mountain Garden club Fri
day, July 18, at the community
clubhouse. William Howell, vice
president, presided in the absence
of the president, Mrs. William
Styles. Guests were Miss Nora
Au of Warren Wilson college; Mr.
and Mrs. Charles Ross uf Mt. Ver- -
non, N. Y., and Mrs. Catherine
Morrison, of Indianapolis, Ind,
Herman Leitenberger, chairman
of the visiting committee, reported
a visit to the garden of Mr, and
Mrs. H. McGuire Wood which he
described as a work of “great gar
dening talent, dramatic in ap
proach and composition and illus
trative of these gardeners’ great
success with plant propagation.” i
Displays of the month included
lilies used in decorations by Arthur
Radcliffe and Fred Schnelz and
plants and seed-pods shown by
Mrs. J. W. llergthold.
The next meeting will be held
on Friday, Aug. 8, at the club
house following a covered-dish sup
per. The program vyill be in charge
of William Pitkin and Mr. and
Mrs. Frank Cordtmeyer.
Last Friday’s meeting concluded
with the showing of floral slides
made in color by Mr. Schnelz, and
a round table discussion of such
garden pests as Japanese beetRs
and various blights. A. E, Wat

ly qualified as expert in firing the
carbine at Fort Eustis, Va. Hold

Holldway, Route 1, Black Moun
tain, is a helicopter mechanic in ®
the (15th Transportation company.
In the Army since September
195(1, he arrived at Fort Eustis
from an assignment in Korea.
Holdway attended Black Moun
tain High school.
