lieve cats prefer to express it in re
verse) he is so determined to be
an actor that he went on-stage one
night without even rehearsing, and
stole one scene in “See How They
Run.’’ Evidently he prefers the
comedy roles.
He is not the only four-footed
devotee of the theater. There is
the “Smiling Dog” who adopted
the whole company from the be
ginning but is Co-Producer Tinka
Crawford’s special fan. She says
that no matter how difficult the
day when this light-hearted, smil
ing dog appears everyone brightens
up. He has been named “Sooner
Dog” for the Sooner hound famed
in fiction. This “Sooner Dog” is
not a hound, however. He is fluf
f> and pert looking and would
"sooner” laugh than cry. He also
helps out in other ways.
He was observed helping pro
ducer-actor Tinka the day before
"Open House” when she and an
other actor were painting the lob
by, or the Green Room, as it is
called by theater people. “Sooner
Dog,” Tinka and Elaine Hunter all
emerged looking closely related to
“Bloody Charles” as they had been
using red paint on the lounge seats
in the Green room. Incidentally,
calling the lobby the Green room,
especially when it is in blue, saf
fron and red, is quite confusing to
many people. The Green room
title comes down through the
years in theater. It was in the
Green room that actors and ac
tresses used to meet their friends
and fans for coffee or champagne
and conversation between acts and
after the show. It is an English
tradition. The Green room of the
Silo Circle playhouse is being used
as a show-case for paintings by
regional artists and a few artists
from far away places, the farthest
away being France.
One of the theater patrons sug
gested another name for the lobby
“The Trough Room,” because,
when the theater was used as a
barn, the cows ate out of big con
crete troughs in this room and
now those concrete troughs have

been cleverly converted into attrac
tive barn-red lounging seats for
the patrais. The painting of
these was one of those last-minute
jobs that caused a great deal of
anxiety—the whole company pray
ed they would be dry enough next
day for the open house. Fortun
ately, their prayers were answered.
The conversion of the feeding
troughs into comfortable lounging
seats for the lobby is only' one
example of ingenious utilization of
what was already there in the
barn. Next we'll tell you more
and also about some of the humor
ous incidents that have occurred—
(humorous now—not at the time!)
July 29. 1948
The Black Mountain All-Stars
lost a 10 to 1 heart-breaker to the
Enka 9 of the City Softball league.
The Black Mountain line-up: N.
Harris, c; Stephenson, p; Gardner,
lb; Rudisill, 2b; Hensley, ss; Smo
lenski, 3b; H. Gray, If; D. Turner,
cf; B. Marett, rf.
The Black Mountain News re
ported that visitors were still us
ing parking meters—putting their
nickels in, although a recent City
Council meeting had outlawed the
meters and they were due to be
removed by the company which in
stalled them. The News remind
ed that there was no more need
to ‘‘put a nickel in the slot” (a
policy which has been entirely re
versed in recent years—again mak
ing the nickel—or a proper num
ber of pennies—quite necessary,
indeed).
The Presbyterians opened the
second half of the season with a
(i-2 baseball victory over Ridge
crest.
In accordance with Ridgecrest
tradition, staff members observed
their annual “Christmas in July.”
A Christmas pageant was present
ed and Santa Claus distributed
gifts.
Numerous citizens were urging
the State Highway department to
place stop-and-go lights at the
intersection of Blue Ridge road
and the main highway, Route 70.

Shoes \ re Like Men!
Of all things made by men, shoes
ire more like themselves than any
other article. Shoes have soles, as
have men, and shoes have tongues,
and shoes have ties. A shoe is
!ost and quite useless without a
nate.
Like men, shoes are high and
ow; some are broad and some are
larrow. Some are black and some
ire white, and some, like men,
wen have a yellow streak in them,
ind ate usually tanned early in
their career.
Shoes like men are made to go
m feet, and they often Jet run
lown at the heel.
Shoes hide their defects some
times under a thin veneer of pol
sh and shine in the world. But
they grow old and wrinkled, and
lew ones step in and take their
ilaces.
Some shoes, like men, support a
iretty woman; others are spurned
t»y a woman who says she wouldn’t
tave them; others are admired by
i woman and made the idol of her
eve. Shoes, like men, cause worry
ind annoyance when they are
‘misfits.' Some shoes are trod
ipon, and some tread on others.
