Dougherty, and Chief L A. Allen will participate with other volunteers and staff members, will give the public opportunity to ob serve improvements which a fund of more than S600 appropriated by the town, and volunteer con tributions of S3 per year by a number of residents outside the township, have been able to achieve. These efforts are in line with the goal of the depart ment and the association to raise standards of the local Fire depart ment into a higher bracket, which would result in the lowering of fire insurance rates for residents of the area. An invitation to attend is ex tended to people of Black Moun tain and the adjacent area which the department serves, including Montreal, Blue Ridge, Ridgecrest, Sw-annanoa, Broad River and all others interested. Items of interest which the public may inspect include the en tire quarters and equipment of the department, including a two way radio on the truck and also a telephone answering service which records details of incoming reports of all fires, and, in turn, relays these to fire-fighters at whatever point from which they call in to report for duty. Also to be seen are new doors on the equipment room, installed by courtesy of Mr. Dougherty and the Black Mountain Lumber com pany, which also furnished paint for refinishing walls and ceilings of upstairs sleeping suarters where firemen remain on call at all times; and improvements also in clude new locker doors, new water heater, new show stall; pav ing of floor in truck room; new fluorescent lighting upstairs; sheets and pillow cases given by STRICTLY PRIVATE! no see-through . . . no show-through TWI-NIGHTER® VENETIAN BLINDS Flexalum Twi-Nighter blinds have exclusive shut-tight design that gives you this complete privacy. The new doors were made possible by funds raised among business men of the community. Weather Clears For Tea and Tour at "Hilltop" It rained and it thundered on Tuesday afternoon, the 12th of August. Mrs. William McMurray, Mrs. Roy Taylor, Mrs. James A. Crawford and Mrs. H. Rankin Miller all sat on the porch of Dr. and Mis. Frank Howard Richard son's home, Hilltop. They looked down the valley at the clouds and talked about teas .for which no body arrived. But the sun broke through and before long a car was heard. Mrs. Miller jumped up and went to her post of duty at the door where she saw to it that all the visitors wrote in the guest book. The first group to come was from Ridgecrest, guests attending the Woman’s Missionary L’nio.i there. They were welcomed by Mrs. William McMurray, president of the Black Mountain Woman’s club. Mrs. Crawford, a former president of the Woman's club, showed them to the “Bodleian” downstairs, and they all prowled around.and looked at some of the old magazines and books while an cestors gazed at them from the walls. The most interesting pic ture has. just been acquired, that of a little girl of five painted on a board by a travelling artist, a piece of real Americana. She be came the grandmother of Dr. Rich ardson. Mrs. Roy Taylor was on hand to welcome juvenile court judges and their wives who were attend ing a conference at Blue Ridge. Judge William Hart, judge of the Juvenile court of Buncombe coun t\ is her brother-in-law. Many judges came and they were most enthusiastic about this part of the country. Dr. and Mrs. Richardson just buzzed around everywhere. There was a good mgyresentation of Black Mountain people and Mrs. Bill Phillips brought a carful from the Monte \ ista. Montreat repre sentatives came, as usual. And so the clouds did not scare too many away. In fact there were 72 in all, and everyone seemed to have a good, informal time. o RENT IT — CLASSIFIEDS! • - CARPETS - • MOHAWK _• ALEXANDER-SMITH •' FIRTH • BARWICK One of the Finest Selections In W.N.C. to Choose From! I REFLECTIONS— From Page 1 gag making the rounds back during depression days. Instead of returning checks with the afore mentioned notation they sent them back in those days marked "No Bank". During World War II when the Air Force was sending thousands of heavy bombers over the continent daily, some bright boy coined this highly descriptive phrase and credited it to the Germans: "1,000 Amer icans bombers flew over North Germany today. Several of our towns are missings." In WW III, with all the im provements in striking power, the term could very well be: "The enemy aimed a small mis sile at our territory today. Half of our continent is missing." That's a happy thought, but could be true. —R— Walter E. Cook, resident of Flor ida by necessity, but whose heart remains in Black Mountain the year-around, passed out copies of the Black Mountain News at a re cent “North Carolina Day” cele bration of the Miami Beach Lions club According to “Cookie'’ and the club bulletin the day was a huge success. Walter wrote in part: “Thanks to you for helping to make North Carolina Day a suc cess at the Miami Beach Lions Lions club. The Black Mountain News did much to make the spot of Black Mountain on ihe map a little bigger.” Present for the meeting was our good friend and former editor of the Asheville Citizen, Don Shoe maker. now editor of the editorial page of the Miami Herald. 3 New Building! Are Scheduled At Ridgecrest Members of the Ridgecrest Bap tist Assembly committee of the Baptist Sunday School board were on the campus Tuesday to inspect the property and to study the pro posed sites of a new classroom building and a Camp Crestridge chapel ami gymnasium. Members of the committee are Boyd R. Simmons, Phoenix, Ariz.; O. K. Webb, Greenville, S.-C.; A. B. Collins, Louisville, Ky.; C. R. Tennison, Houston, Tex.; J. Earl Mead, Dallas, Tex-.: Bruce H. Price, Norfolk, Va.; and Kenneth M. Hayes, a North Carolinian. The classroom building is sched uled to be completed by June 1, 1959. It will be built where Crys tal Springs lodge now stands. The lodge, one of the oldest structures on the grounds, will be torn down, beginning September 1. Plans for the building call for 20,000 square feet of floor space, or 24 rooms. It will eventually have a floor space of 20,000 square feet. An amphitheater with a seat ing capacity of 300 will be included in the structure. An overhead walkway will connect the auditor ium with the second floor of the building. Two buildings will be added to the Camp Crestridge plant. A $15,000 chapel, made possible by a donation from Louis T. Tenerelli of Delray Beach, Fla., and a $30, 000 gymnasium will be ready for use next season. PARENTS AND TEACHERS OF BAPT.
