With the Youngsters On Top of Old Mitchell Saturday being the kind of day it was. we went up to take a look at the widespread world of autumn from atop Mt. Mitchell, and the picture was vivid enough to color whatever winter days may lie ahead between now and blossom time in the valley. In the lodge we had a chance to see the por traits of Dr. Mitchell and “Big Tom" Wilson, the work of a Swan nanoa artist, created against a background of the mountains they loved to roam. Already the high slopes are browning off a bit from the peak of their autumn colors, but the middle and lower altitudes were bright with hickory and tulip, dog wood and sourwood and maple. The Park personnel forecast the lower ranges would be at their peak of color on the coming week end. Reminiscent of Mr. "Bittersweet" A pause at Craggy on route home brought vivid remembrance of Oden Walker, for it was there he and Minnie were married. He re minded us just a week before his sudden and fatal illness that he thought the wedding in that color ful setting provided him with the best Bittersweet” column he ever wrote for the News. A hawk swooping over Mitchell reminded us of the observation one of our young friends made by way of settling an argument for all time—and perhaps a method which could well be adopted for settling larger problems peacefully. The youngster, a bird-watcher even at his early age. called out to an elderly friend: "Look, there's an eagle” The friend insisted. “That’s no eagle, it’s a hawk”, only to have the young man insist.-“Beg your pardon, but it’s an eagle". The older observer wasn’t con vineed. so the younger finally sug gested, "Well, you keep your hawk —and I’ll take my eagle". That line has become a family admoni tion whenever an argument comes up—and has served well as a peacemaker. Not so peaceful was another in cident in the same now local fam ily. They were just moving into a quiet college community and their household goods were being carried into their new home on faculty row. The long trip by auto had the youngsters pretty well keyed up. They poured out of the car and proceeded to thread their way among the furniture movers; then weary in the con fusion, began to tease one another. WEST VIRGINIA (Continued) I want to tell you of a singing and a hard-shelled Baptist preach ing service 1 attended while we lived in West Virginia. That was my first recollection until my mar riage at the age of 19 in 1900. We didn’t have any of the attrac tions young folks have today, so we all attended church. As we only had three months of free ■school, we'd have a 10-day sing school or so every year. We learn ed vocal music. We didn’t have any instrumental music in those clays. 1 had never forgotten my early training. My voice was so low-pitched I couldn't sing soprano very well. So I’ve always sung alto. 1 have attended church everywhere we have lived and sung with the choir. When we arrived in West Vir ginia 1 went to church with the neighbors. Someone told the song leader 1 could sing, so he invited me in the choir and gave me a song book. There were more good singers, 1 believe, than I’ve ever heard, especially men folks. Everyone sang soprano. No bass or tenor. 1 never knew what they thought of me singing alto. Next day a woman came to me in the store and said her brother, Theodore Meadows, had heard of my singing at church. He was dying to meet me! HA! 1 didn’t want to see her brother. She ask ed what could 1 sing. 1 told her “about anything in the song book”. She said her brother, Theo, could sing anything, too. 1 took it as an insult. Before the week was out Meadows appointed a singing at the church and sent me an in vitation to be there. Mark’s cou sin’s wife, was a native of West \ irginia. She didn’t know me very well. She came down, worried, and said Theo Meadows had appointed that singing to stall me so he d have something to laugh over. 1 told her not to worry. Pd he there. There was a large attend ance. He waited until the last moment, and came swaggering in and sat down on the organ stool. (He had a high pitched voice that sounded as if he was half out of pitch). He selected a song and started singing. About half way ot the first score, he lost his song, and made a bad discord. His face turned red. He had to go back and start over. Every song he selected known from my childhood, time the singing was over, quieted down and that was singing he appointed w! lived in West Virginia. Local residents are invited to attend a meeting of the Asheville chapter of the United Nations as sociation Oct. 24 at 8 p.m. in Central Methodist church. The local UN committee met last week to plan how to aid this com munity to observe the week. It was suggested that churches make note of the UN in their services, that schools and civic clubs give some time to a survey of its work and present role in world affairs. In order to foster such observ ances, material has been placed bv the committee at the Chamber of Commerce office on the first floor of City Hall, and the group said this contains accurate and complete information on the UN. as well as a certain amount of ma terial for exhibition purposes, rhis material is furnished without charge to any who wish to make jse of it.
