C., is serving: aboard the heavy cruis er USS Des Moines, which visited Genoa, Italy, Nov. 6-14, after ten days of fleet exercises off the coast. The Des Moines, flagship for the U. S. Sixth Fleet, operates out of Villefranche, France. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (FHTNC) — J. B. Harwood, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. P. Harwood of Black Mountain, N. C., was graduated from recruit training Oct. 31 at the Naval Training Center, San Diego, Calif. The graduation exercises, mark ing the end of nine weeks of “boot camp," included a full dress parade and review before military offic ials and civilian dignitaries. Byas, 24, whose wife, Ruby, lives on Rt. 1, Nebo, N. C., recently participated in combat ef ficiency training tests in Ger many. Specialist Byas, son of Henry I.. Byas, Rt. 1, Swannanoa, is a rifle man in the 14th Armored Cavalry Regiment’s Company F in Bad Kis singen. He entered the Army in February 1957 and arrived in Eur ope the following November. Byas, whose mother, Mrs. Lela M. Burgess, lives in Swannanoa, is a 1954 graduate of Swannanoa High school. (JAMI LEJEUNE, N. C., (FHT NC)—Marine Pvt. Charles L. Bart lett, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe B. Bartlett of High School road, Black Mountain, N. C., is scheduled to graduate Dec. 19 from an inten sive four-week infantry training course at Camp Lejeune, N. C. During this period Marines live primarily in the field and take part in bivouacs, marches and mus cle building exercises. This training, followed by two weeks leave, completes the basic Marine Corps training. Graduates are then assigned to specialist schools oi- a permanent duty as signment. STANTON, CALIF.
