MONTREAT MISS JULIA STOKES Montreat was quite gay foi Christmas. Some 25 guests caller to see Mrs. Mellinger Henry or December 23 in her home on Vir ginia road. Miss Florence Illidgt assisted Miss Julia Stokes in serv ing the guests. Carols, led b> Mrs. Collins Lee, were sung. Mrs Harold Coburn told a Christmas story. The Christmas decorations were added to by a Christmas tree which was set up and decorated on Monday night by Mrs. Pollard and family of Black Mountain. The lovely Christmas party giv en by Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Stubbs on Christmas afternoon in then home on Tennessee road was well attended. The home was beautiful in Christmas decorations. Mrs. Stubbs was assisted in entertain ing by Mrs. Robert Quillan, Miss Helen Miles, Miss Teresa Garcia, Miss Yolanda Swarez, Anne Stubbs, and Alice Hopper. Many parties for the young people were en joyed. Mrs. C. A. Stubbs and a group of small girls, some from Black Mountain, visited the shut R. C. BOWNESS BUILDER P.O.Box 1068 — Black Mtn. ins and sang: Christmas carols. A group of the young college and senior high school group went car oling on Christinas eve. This was a beautiful moon-lit night and the voices sounded very sweet on the night air. Mrs. Sue Solomon and Mrs. W u liam Griffin entertained at coffee, fruit cake and candies on Christ mas Eve in the post, office. This has become an annual affair for the post office staff to do for theii patrons. Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Stubbs and family spent a few days during the holidays visiting Mrs. Stubbs’ brother and family in Wilson, N. C. They also visited Mr. Stubbs sister in Richmond, Va. In spite of the rain on Sunday morning, December 28, the wor ship service held in the lobby of Assembly Inn was well attended. This service was devoted to young people and our college students took part in the service. The pastor, the Rev. Stanley Bennett, was in charge of the ser vice. The Rev. Clayton Bell led in the pastoral prayer. The scrip ture was read by Dan Wilson, a student in University of North Carolina, Zolton Soos led the re sponsive scripture reading, and Blake Brinkerhoff preached a fine sermon. Zolton Soos is a student in Harvard University, and Blake Brinkerhoff a student in Union Theological Seminary, Richmond, Va. He is at present assistant pastor of Presbyterian church, Miami, Fla. The Women of the Church will hold their monthly meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 13, for a special study of the Bible presented to the circles this next year. The .. 1 — Mm. Va. The bride is the daughter >- Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Samuel Jol ns of Farmville, RFD 2. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. I' Cary Adams. Wed ding music was presented by Mrs. Judson Dowdy, pianist, and H. H. Goodman, vocalist. Given in arriage by her father, the bride wore a gown of silk mist taffeta and Alencon lace, a tiered veil attached to a bandeau of taf feta and lace embroidered with pearls, and she carried a white or chid on a prayer book. Miss Louise Johns of Farmville, sister of the bride, was maid of honor and was attired in a street length emerald green velveteen dress with matching headbands and carried a white muff trimmed with holly and carnations. Miss Margaret Johns, another sister of the bride, and Miss Fran ces Johns, cousin of the bride, both of Farmville, were bridesmaids. Miss Reuben Anne Johns, sister of the bride, was junior bridesmaid. They were all dressed like the honor attendent. Frank Johns, cousin of the bride, was ringbearer. James Guthrie Anderson of Charlotte Court House, brother of the bridegroom, was best man. After a reception in the social hall of the church, the couple left for a wedding trip south. Mrs. Anderson will complete her requirements in February and will graduate from Montreat college in June. After February they will reside in Maxton where Mr. An derson is a student in the Presby terian Junior college. The last worship service held in Assembly Inn for the holidays was held on Sunday morning, jan. 4, at 11 o'clock. A good crowd was in attendance as many of the stu dents have returned and other vis itors are in Montreat for the holi days. Among those attending the service were: Dr. and Mrs. Billy Graham and their family. Rev. and Mrs. John Somerville and their young son, Severn, who made his first public appearance in church at this service. The pastor, the Rev. Stanley Bennett, preached on “Christ, the Prince of Peace.” Allan Guy sang "Peace, Perfect "Peace,” as solo with Miss Lucile McElroy at the piano. On next Sunday the church ser vice will be in Gaither chapel. The Lord's Supper will be observed. The college resumed classes on Monday. Jan. 32. Dr. and Mrs. L. J. Mr. and Mrs. Kay Stutts spent part of the vacation in Lineolnton with Mrs. Stutts’ mother. They also visited other relatives. Mrs. Shaw McEachern spent a short time in her home on Virginia load on Saturday. She spent Christmas with her daughter and family in Selmer, Tenn., and was on her way to her work in Lenoir Rhyne college, Hickory. Skippy, the pet dog of Mrs. Ira Holt and Miss Jane Holt died dur ing the holidays. He was 15 yeafs old and was well known to all Montreat. He was a much traveled dog as he has toured the country with his mistresses. Dr. and Mrs. Joseph Hopper and Rev. and Mrs. Joe B. Hopper will spend a few days with the Rev. and Mrs. George Hopper in New Orleans, La.
