TO MY SON
Beloved son,
Whose face I long to see,
Whose hand I long to touch;
far from me thou needs must go
I search for faith
To understand.
Thy strong, young body.
Thy keen, swift mind,
I had not willed for battlefields
When in my arms I held thee as a
babe.
But since thou must, with other
sons
Bend ’neath the yoke of war;
Knowing thy proud and loyal heart
I need not pray that thou be brave;
Only that God should keep thee
safe.
And give to me again.
Out of the tumult and the strife
That men call battle,
My beloved son,
Whose face I long to see.
Whose hand I long to touch.

Writing Club.

SPOTLIGHT ON FRANKS
Tuck a hot, juicy frankfurter in
:o a bun, add mustard, onion, and
sickle relish, and m-m-m-m!—one
site will convince you why franks
save become an American institu
,ion.
Today the perennial “hot dog”
a being challenged by innumerable
•ther frankfurter favorites. Home
nakers have learned that this well
;easoned sausage fits into main
lishes, salads and snacks with
imazing versatility. A pound of
ranks on hand in the refrigerator
issures you of quick, convenient
•ating—easy on the budget be
:ause there is absolutely' no waste.
Already thoroughly cooked by
;team and smoked over hardw'ood
'ires, franks need only to be re
lated. Simplest way is to place
hem in boiling water to cover, re
nove pan from heat, cover with a
id and let stand for 7 to 8 min
ites. Or steam franks gently for
ibout / minutes in covered sauce
ian containing boiling water to
lepth of f.j inch. \\ hen cooking
'ranks over an outdoor grill, re
nember that “easy does it.” Guard
igainst intense heat that will make
he franks split and allow the
uices to escape. Turn the franks
requently for even heating and
>rowning.
Meaty, rich-flavored frankfurt
srs combine well with potatoes,
nacaroni, rice, vegetables and
treads. And a leftover frank or
wo, sliced and scrambled with
’gg, or added to hot soup, makes
a quick and nutritious lunch or
supper. Or, since the franks are
already cooked, use them sliced or
chopped in salads or sandwich fill
ings.
However you serve franks, when
ever you serve them, you’ll be sure
to win the family’s hearty ap

DYE STUFF
With a package of dye, you can
refurbish a trinket, create a new
effect, or just have fun. Have you
tried:
Giving your old yellowed fake 1
pearls a new lease on life? Dunk
them in cobalt blue or hot pink.
Tinting fresh flowers in a cool
dye solution? Just swish carna
tions, daisies or dried seed pods
and grasses in the color effect you
want.
Reviving shantung or rayon or |
white straw shoes by brushing a
strong solution of dye on them? <
Use a narrow new paint brush and
work quickly, having previously
dry-cleaned the shoes.
Changing the color of a fabric
lampshade ? Tie a cord on the
center of the framework and dip
shade in and out of warm solution.
Hang up on show'er rod or clothes
line to dry.
Dyeing turkey or chicken feath
ers in wild colors for an Indian
headdress for your small fry ?
Dyeing a faded transparent plas
tic raincoat? Clear ones work
best, but interesting effects can be
achieved with already tinted ones.
