UZZELL'S REXALL Member Western North Carolina Drug Club I ☆ COMPLETE PHOTO-FILM SERVICE £ • HALLMARK CARDS • WHITMAN CANDY • REVLON Boys and Girls of Black Mountain Express Interest In Youth Center One of the most interesting fac ets of this community's plans for a permanent youth center is the wish which many Black Mountain boys and girls themselves are ex pressing to be of help on the pro ject. One group was on hand early in the recent task of clearing the Cragmont road site of brush and trees before “Operation Youth." comprised of sponsoring elders in the town, could go ahead and clear the land. A number of young people have expressed themselves as willing to be “cleaner-uppers" when the building does become a reality and is put into use. Hopes of the sponsors of this “Finer Car olina" project are that the club house can be ready for use this spring—and toward this end are urging community members to make generous contributions in a financial way. Meanwhile, the interest of the boys and girls representative of some whom the center will serve, continues to be high. Below are excerpts from a few more compo sitions by Black Mountain school students which attest to this inter est. It is the News’ hope that others can be published in coming weeks. By JUNE BOONE ‘‘Operation Youth' is a plan for youth recreation. A nice name for it would be “The Youth Center.” It would be frood to have a full-time director. Chaperones should always be pres ent while activities are going on. Activities should be planned for different age groups. Crafts could be taught to the younger group. People from 8 to 18 should be al lowed to attend. Our deepest appreciation goes to all who are helping to make this plan possible. By DORIS RARTLF.TT We think that the Operation Youth should be for children from the ages of 13 to 18. We think that we should hdve a basketball team for both the boys and girls. We think that we should have a dance room and a place to teach the ones that don’t know how to dance. We think that maybe a man could teach boys and girls that would like to drive so it would be easier for them to get their driving license. It seems, too, we might have a swimming pool with a life guard. We think that it would be nice if there were a rid ing ground. We think that we could use the building for Scouts and other meetings. We think we should have a room for the ones that like to do crafts and other such work. We think that we should have a director for the boys and girls. We think that we should also have a football team for the town of Black Mountain and a football coach. We think that if we have an “Operation Youth” in Black Mountain that it will be bet ter for our town. We think that this organization will help all of P the young people to have some wholesome activity. By MARGARET McDONALD A rough plan or sketch has al ready been drawn up of the pro posed youth center by R. H. West brook. I would like to have a one story building with an entrance hall, cloakroom, girls’ and boys' loungers, a game equipment room, a study hall, and a huge meeting room for Girl Scouts, Boy S’out-, and other such organizations. On the outside of the building. I would like to have a small foot ball field and a baseball diamond. A large grassy area would be very nice so the children could play bad minton and other games. We should have special classes, every now and then, to teach us knitting. sewing, dancing, etc. The direction of the youth cen ter should be left up to persons who like to work with children of different ages. A salary should be paid to these persons (approxi mately two or three) from a small payment of about fifty cents from each member. At least one of these person? should have had a Red Cross first aid course. I am sure that this youth cen ter will make Black Mountain a better town and community in which to live. By FLO BARNHILL The sole purpose is to build a Youth Center where recreational activities will take place. Sports will be one activity, both indoor and outdoor, such as tennis, bowl ing, and possibly swimming and so on. Some suggested ideas are need ed from young people throughout the town. A few of these are: (11 To have night classes such as typ ing, industrial arts, etc. (2) To have organized club meetings such as the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, etc. (3) To have trained instructors to enable sports to be taught, handi crafts and so on. This program will be exclusive ly for young people. In my opin ion this project will build stronger character and citizenship among teen-agers. Full co-operation from the teen-agers and citizens in Black Mountain is needed. By CHERYL FAULK The Youth Center is a plan of recreation for young people. It will include space for such things as ping pong, soccer, bask etball and outdoor space for base ball. football, and volley ball. The building should, if possible, have instructors to teach girls sewing, cooking, housekeeping, et cetera, and boys wiring, electricity, working with their hands, learning outdoor life, how to help with a farm, learn about guns and how to use them, and hike. Fun for both boys and girls would include games, swimming, and dancing. The young people, instead of causing trouble and worry about where they are going to spend their spare time, will find amus SA VE!!! They will learn to get along with children their own age, while also learning good citizenship. The center should he run by the young people themselves. They know what they most want and how to do it. They could make rules to be followed. But they should be carried out. Advice could be given by adults who en- j joy working with young people. The building could include some school lessons for the slow stu dent-. Such subjects as arithme tic. English, and spelling would be the most important. The next grade will be easier to understand. During the summer it could be a little like summer school. Since the Blue Ridge Assembly. Recreation park, and other recrea tion centers and assemblies close down during the autumn and win ter. there is no place for young people to go in their spare time. A youth center would be a great advantage in any community. By BECKY HUDSON The recreation center will pro- j vide a place for teen-agers to have wholesome fun. Contact with oth ers will better their personalities. This should prevent juvenile de linquency by affording a place to go in one’s idle time. The center can also be used as a meeting place for organizations and clubs such as Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. A recreational director and a committee of young people would organize activities and keep order. Rules made by the young people would be concerned with conduct on the premises and use of the facilities. I feel that this is the best move our town has made for the youth here. I hope we will have the sup port of the adult citizens I By ELAINE HAMPTON They have had stories concern ing the organization and young people in the Black Mountain News for the last month or two. Plans for the construction of the build ings were in the Black Mountain News and are posted at the Black Mountain Elementary school. What they want the most, besides mon ey. are suggestions from the young people as to what they would like to have at the club and how they would like the club to be run. The site of the club is to be on the lots between the Cragmont road and U. S. To, about one-half mile west of Black Mountain. The young people would like to have a basketball team and a baseball team which might compete with other teams from other towns, horseback riding, a swimming pool which would be larger than the one at the Black Mountain club house. We would like for some of the young people to help take care of and run the club. We would like to have the club for people between the ages of about 8 through 18. We express our gratitude very sincerely to the people that are helping in all that they are doing for us. We know we shall enjoy the club very much when it is fin ished. ■ By RAY CORBIN The reason we call it “Operation ! Youth Center” is because it will be 1 operated for and by young people and also older people to help us. The reason that we hope and j want to build and start “Operation Youth Center* is, because it will help and keep a lot of young peo ple from getting into trouble, such as having gangs, staying in beer joints, breaking in houses and stores, and there are many other things that a lot of young people would do that would cause trouble. We already have $3,300; we need $7500 altogether. We need directors and coaches who will help and train us how to ! lo in games and athletics. The most important thing we need is your help. ■ TABERNACLE METHODIST YOUNG PEOPLE ENJOY VALENTINE GATHERING The young people of Tabernacle Methodist church met Saturday j night in the fellowship room for a ; Valentine party.
