At Owen By Nancy DuPuy One of the senior sociology classes has just completed units on marriage, divorce and juvepile delinquency. Through Mrs. Hazel Wilson, their teacher, they nave studied the importance o f preparation for marriage and many factors of .1 successful one. Also they ex amined reasons for broken homes and effects of ______such separations. Interesting talks were given on these subiects by Ruth Hollifield and Ann Perry. , For further study, a panel dis cussion on juvenile delinquency was held bv several members of the class those who participated were Pat Gill, Shirley Pressley, Talmadge Roberts, Philip Stone, Bobby Ledbetter, Marlene Payette and Christine Hart, with Joe Rob inson as moderator. Each student wrote a paper on way of building more stable homes. One of the most outstanding ones was written by Ann Perrv and is as follows: HOW TO BUILD MORE STABLE FAMILIES “Today the stability of family life is 'threatened by forces un dreamed of several generations ago. In the life span of one gen eration, the world has been shaken by turn world wars. There has been widespread industrialization and unthought of development in education, transportation and com munication. Also there has been a constant rise in conflicting ideologies. me u family cannot escape the effect these forces have had upon total life in the modern world. “The efforts to main family un ity must always be present and in :onstant practice. One of the first things to deal with in building more stable families is to recognize hat family unity HAS changed. Basically, there are certain historic characteristics that must be pre served. Likewise, there are certain modern characteristics that must )e discarded. Therefore, one may Iraw the conclusion that every ihing old is not bad: and every hing new is not necessarily good, rhus, intelligent discrimination is necessary. The basis of such dis crimination may be recognition hat the home is not the basis of he entire society, as it once was. Foday, members of the family do not depend upon each other for survival, since industrialization.has diifted the means of a family's ivelihood. Many varied careers attract different members from a family. Once the purpose of. a nome was to unerringly instruct he daughters to be wives and the ions to follow in their fathers’ “Since time immemorial, people nave made themselves aware of the act that the divine plan of God or humanity is establishment of i family. It was His first insti ution in the world. In accord ince with His plan, this institution s to produce children—His means if continuing the human race. “The family stability is main ained by a twofold love: Love or God. and love for each other. \ mutual respect and reverence for God is the greatest unifying force. This reverence recognizes His purpose in His institution of family unity. Love for each other includes sacrifice and responsibil tv shared by each for all. Deep .vithin this family love lies a pride n family heritage. Each member lome before reporting' to Cherry Point for reassignment. Fam dies upholding these qualities show pride in each other’s sue cesses. They show understanding and helping attitudes in each other's failures. There must be a security which the whole fam ily feels in belonging to one another. “There is no phase of moderr living more influenced by pres sures from outside the home, than those affecting entertainment and recreation. Many of these pres sures contribute enrichment and creative leisure. Nevertheless many pressures have the destruct ive power to completely break family unity. At this point, there fore, there is great need for dis crimination. Here. the family must offer the pleasures that are more appealing than the destruct ive elements.
