The Hymns
We Love
By Vernon Johnson
Millions of people find solace
and comfort in this popular gospel
hymn.
Back in l‘)12, the composer, Aus
tin Miles, was asked to write a
hymn-poem that would be “sympa
thetic in tone, breathing tenderness
in every line: one that would bring
hope to the hopeless, rest for the
weary, and downy pillows to dying
beds.”
Turning to the beautiful story of
the Resurrection morn, when the
three women were coming early
“while it was yet dark to the
tomb, he found inspiration for this
hymn:
1 come to the garden alone
While the dew is still on the roses;
And the voice I hear, falling on my
ear
The Son of God discloses.
And He walks with me. and He
talks with me
And He tells me T am His own,
And the joy we share as we tarry
there,
None other has ever known.
Miles wrote not only the words,
but the music, too. Its popularity
testifies to the fragrance of its
memories and its tender-hearted
atmosphere.
The author was horn in 1868 in
Lakehurst, N. J. He began his
musical career at 12 in a rural
Methodist church. Later in life,
he became a publisher of hymns,
and was the editor of scores of
hymnals. He died in 1946.

April Marked As
"Teacher Career”
Month in Nation
Marking North Carolina partic
ipation in observance of April as
“Teacher Career Month’’ and urg
ing the interest of all in the field
of education, Mrs. Daintry Gra
ham Allison, teacher at Fairview
school, has authored a “Teacher
Career Prayer” which has been
disseminated among leaders in the
profession here.
Mrs. Allison’s prayer asks:
“Almighty God, our heavenly
Father, whose will it is that dark
ness shall never triumph over
light, we bow with grateful hearts
to Thee in thanksgiving for all
who learn and all who teach. As
we see our ranks of teachers thin
ning too rapidly, and too few re
cruits willing and ready to take
our places, we pray Thee that Thou
wilt reconsecrate all teachers to
the task in hand; deepen and in
tensify their dedication to service
to humanity. When discouragement
creeps in, do Thou comfort with
new hope, renewed vigor and tire
less enthusiasm—which things
Thou alone can furnish.
“We bless Thy great name for
all those loyal lay citizens who
uphold the hands of school people,
as the hands of Thy servant Joshua
were upheld in the day of battle.
Do Thou fit a blessing to each of
them, and may their numbers in
crease. We recognize the fact that
there are still many whose eyes
are not yet opened to the present
crisis and dire needs of our pub
lic schools. Do Thou, the giver
of all light, illumine their under
standing and quicken their percep
tion that they also may realize
that truly America’s future goes j
to school' today; that our youth
must be taught—and well taught.
“Bless those young teachers-to
be who will follow in our foot
steps. May they never waver from
their determination to teach, that
this land shall continue to be a
great bulwark of strength in a
staggering, uncertain world.
“Grant that all teachers may al
ways endeavor daily to make to
day’s work better than yesterday’s,
ever raising their own standards of
excellence, ever improving. May
they speak boldly and unashamed
for those materials necessary for !
acceptable work, never ashamed |
to stand unswervingly for those
things children need, ever alert to
all facets of child welfare.
“These favors we humbly beg in
Thy own blessed name. Amen.”
