Jimmy Suttles spent his two weeks’ vacation away from his position at Old Fort Finishing I’lant in Vero Beach, Fla. His mother, Mrs. Odell Ward, returned home with him to spend several weeks with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lonnie Sherrill. . . . Mr. and Mrs. Latta Whistnant and daugh ter, Patty, of Winstory-Salem, were holiday guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Bradley. . . . Miss Sharon Harmon, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Harmon of Hickory spent the past week visiting her grand mothers, Mrs. Fred Allison and Mrs. Paul Harmon. . . . Mrs. Opal Fox has announced the mar riage of her daughter, Miss Char lene Stevens, to Clifford Warren, June 27 in Atlanta, Ga. Mr. War ren is from Old Fort also. He is employed at an air base in At lanta, and that is where the young couple will make their home. They went to Daytona Beach on then wedding trip . . . Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Lackey of New York City spent the 4th of July at their home here and returned to New York on Monday . . . Miss Dorace Tuttle of Charleston, S. C„ Miss Nancy Leopold and Miss Barbara Buson of Isle of Palms, S. Her cat “Peter” strayed, or was stolen, from her home on Monday morning, or Sunday night. . . . He was a beloved house pet and she is greatly distressed by his loss. • . . Mrs. Pearl Carver and daugh ter, Mrs. Lucile Mahaffy and her two children of Bridgton, N. J., are visiting Mrs. Susie Carver, and Rulo and Ted Carver for two weeks. . . . The Vann Hughes res idence is a center of great activ ity as preparations are being made for the wedding of daughter, Nancy, Saturday, July 11 in the Old Fort Baptist church. . . . The two traffic lights in Old Fort were turned into blinkers during the holidays to accelerate the flow of cars through town, and they went through practically bumper to-bumper. . . . The Rev. and Mrs. Neal Jacobs and daughter and two sons of Ft. Pierce, Fla., and their niece, Miss Carol Ann Koch of New York, were recent visitors at the home of the Fred Bradleys. Mrs. Bradley and Miss Bernice Hoof are their cousins . . . Mem bers of the Old Fort Methodist church held a ground-breaking ceremony Sunday morning for an educational fellowship building to be constructed facing on Crawford street. The new church building will cost around $35,000. One unit estimated to cost $25,000 will be built this year. It will consist of a hall which will accommodate 140 persons at tables; a kitchen, a study, office, rest rooms and six classrooms. Construction of this first unit will be under supervis ion of Earl Padgett, chairman of the building fund. Other mem bers of the committee are Mrs. Elizabeth Lindley, secretary; Mur ray Dominick, treasurer, C. E. Williams, Max Hunt, George Flin tom, Rulo Kelly and the Rev. Wal ter Cooper. Architects Gudger, Baber and Wood of Asheville de signed the planned structure which will have when completed, 5,105 ft. of floor space. . . . The A. Shif iet home is being moved away out in the country near Faws borne on Sugar Hill road. The Shiflets plan to live in it them selves, rather than rent it. . . . Binkie Adams is still looking for work. . . . Mrs. Lazelle Northrup of Winston-Salem visited her sis ter, Mrs. Charles Stirewalt and Mr. Stirewalt last week. Young Charles S. is nursing a severely lacerated toe which he injured while riding his bicycle. The mem ber was practically shredded. It was necessary for a physician to repair it with five stitches. Charles is on his feet, but has to hop. . . . Little Harriet Josey has been visiting her paternal grand mother, at Maiden, N. C. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Josey. . . . Members of the Old Fort Methodist church will serve charcoal grilled hamburgers from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, July 11. They can be bought on the -hurch grounds, eaten there, or taken with you. Proceeds go to the church building fund. . . . Jack Allison came from F’t. Belvoir, V'a., to spend the holidays with bis parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Allison. He flew back to his sta tion. . . . The three remaining •hildren of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Vess, and their families held t family gathering at the Old Fort oicnic grounds on the old Ashe -'iile highway Sunday, July 5. Or ginally there were eight children, jut now only Mrs. Richard Harris >f Old Fort, Mrs. S. D. Pyatte of Asheville, and O. B. Vess of Con verse, S. C., survive.
