Their coach, Ar thur Pitt, seems justly proud of his scrappy team. The se cret of their success, he says, is the boys themselves and their playing as a unit. The JVarponies are separate from the varsity: they practice sep arately, and there is no switch ing from one team to the oth er. He continued, the fellows know they aren’t going to be pushed around by more ex perienced boys. They have taken time to learn the fund amentals. and it has paid off. Harper and Ball have been doing well, also. Cecil Caldwell seems to be the outstanding back in this hard-running backfield. He has had two tallies in each game to date, the majority of them being 45-55 yard sprints. These are the boys who will be varsity team in a year or so. The backers of Larkins, Hewlett, and Sanford were weaving in and out of the crowd shaking hands and telling all that their man is not only out to win but will carry three-fourths of the counties west of the Atlan tic. It promises to shape up as an interesting and close fight before the last ballet is counted and the winner announced. —R— WHAT HAPPENED? Watching high school, col lege, and professional football you wonder what happened to the weaving, bobbing, dancing type of runners that used to be so much a past of the grid scene each fall. There is no one in football, in my opinion, who can match the footwork of Charlie Jus tice, Gene McEver, Buddy Hackman, Johnny Branch, Jack McDowell, Dixie Roberts, Red Grange; and others that not many of the younger fans will remember. Today the backs, speeded through the line by the T formation and the brush block, run either straight ahead or swing wide. ‘‘They either run around you or over you” one avid fan remarked. ‘‘It seems that broken field running is almost a thing of the past." That started me to thinking Acreage Wanted If you have acreage near Black Mountain for sale I am interest ed in buying. Write "Acreage", c/o Black Mountain News. DR. H. A. In the day before the 5 T and its variations became ■ so popular, when the single wing, double wing, Notre Dame shift and box forma tions were the style, a team was not complete without at least one hack who could car ry the mail through a broken field. That was the day of the quick kick, the “pass, - punt, and pray” type of of fense, when the bickers knock ed their victim down and sat on him if need be in order to spring their man into the open where he was on his own. Which is best? You could argue all day about that and still not reach any conclusion. Each had and has its place. There are signs that the em phasis may shift from the T to a more open style of play, but there again that depends on the material. The coach must plan his offense to fit the boys he has available at any given time. There is no doubt that they are doing pretty well with the T. Classifieds Sell - Ph.
