WALTERS— Phone: NO 9-4641 V COOCOOOOOCQC a^LCJLOJULOJLOJLS_fiJJ_fi_8JLBJL2JL8J2_BJL Sunday morning at Ridge crest 1 looked out on a verit able fairyland as 1 pulled back my curtains at t>:MO. As far as 1 could see the trees and every’ tiny shrub were deli cately laced with frost plumes. The tiny tracery made by the bare boughs coated with the delicate ice was unbelievably beautiful. As the sun came up I walked outside to watch as it touched the top of Rat tlesnake. Before my eyes the vision disappeared. Life can be filled with lovely things like this; and even though the view is fleeting the beauty remains etched on the mem ory. It was a service especially honoring the deacons of the church. Willard K. School Bus Safely Rules Are Outlined Ollis D. Griffin sought t head off a disaster this week lie went about it by surr marizing some of the mor important rules governin highway traffic and schoc ~ buses. Griffin is the Motor Vehicle department's top authority 01 i safe school bus transportatior a ’round-the-clock activity thi time of year for the 46-yea ‘ old expert. Griffin declared it’s not ii , the least overdramatic to labe r a school bus accident of an; . type a disaster. 1 “We are still rememberin; - the three tykes who were fa tally injured in mishaps las ’ school term." be said. "Wi r must not permit that to hap pen again.” The safety chief had this ti . say about what's expected o motorists around school buses All North Carolina buses ari . painted a vivid orange and an ■ equipped with flashing re( ■ lights, visible from both fron anti rear. I ne driver turn: ' them on whenever the bus ii , stopped in the highway t( handle passengers, i Clear and instant recognitior of a school bus should post no problem for any driver, ht said. When meeting or overtaking a bus handling children driv ers must come to a complete stop and remain so until the bus pulls away. Griffin warned that careless ness here will cost the guilty driver five points against his record. An accumulation of 12 points within two years means loss of driving privileges under the state's point system. One significant change in the regulations resulted from an amendment approved by the last General Assembly. Griffin summed it up by saying drivers are no longer required to stop when travel ing on a divided or separated highway. “This is the familiar type highway, divided down the middle by an ‘island’ and is actually two separate roads.” he said. “Therefore drivers need not come to a halt when meeting a bus under these conditions.” Otherwise all other regula tions remain unchanged, he declared. Griffin expressed the hope that all Tar Heel drivers would hold a critical self analysis of their driving habits around school buses. "These rules are in line with the Uniform Vehicle Code,” he said, "and are designed to give maximum protection for child ren while keeping interference with normal traffic to a min imum.” —Today’s traffic tip from the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles: Pass care fully or pass away!
