Harvey, who works at the Veterans hospital at Swannanoa, grew the tuber in his garden at home here. Meek of Prayer Members of the Marion Seventh-Day Adventist church have just completed a week of prayer. Meetings were held nightly throughout the week ‘‘to strengthen the personal relationship of individual members with God.” Old Fort members met at Pine Cove. The event is held twice a year in all Adventist churches throughout the world. Aged Citizen Passes Mrs. Sallie Robinson Farm er, 84, of this place, died at her residence last Monday morning, Nov. 9 after a long illness. Funeral services were con ducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Old Fort Wesleyan Methodist church by the Rev. Glenn Powell. Burial was in Piney Grove cemetery. Mrs. Farmer is survived by two sons, Carl C. and Fleming Farmer of Old Fort; six daughters, Mrs. Carl Kelly and Mrs. Carroll Davis of Old Fort, Mrs. Ted Blalock of Oteen, Mrs. James Bright of Jacksonville, Fla., Mrs. Ollie Duncan of Morganton, Mrs. Myrtle Burroughs of Wiscon sin; 32 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. Ground Broken for Offices The Harold Dysart company has begun work on a suite of offices for Dr. Jerry Snyder, Old Fort dentist, located on the Russell Griffin property on Main street. Mr. Griffin is having the building con structed on the North corner of the lot adjoining the Mc Intosh property. The building will be one storied, and will be modern in every respect with ample accommodations for the doc tor facilities. It is expected to be completed in about 60 days. At present, Dr. Sny der’s offices are in the Mash burn building. Landmark Beauty Shop Opens Two enterprising young la dies, both named Joan, have opened a new beauty shop on Main street in the Sandlin building known as the Land mark. The attractive salon is fur nished with the latest equip ment to make Milady more beautiful than she already is, and the two Joans, Joan Tur^ ner and Joan Hogan, grad uates of accredited beauty colleges, have their diplomas and licenses framed and on the -wall, and are ready and willing to improve the scenery in our town. Miss Turner is the daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. Johnnie Turner, and Miss Hogan is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Guy Hogan. Good luck, young ladies. Garden Club Has Session The Hoe & Hope Garden club held its November meet ing- at the home of Mrs. Helen Shiflet on last Thursday af ternoon, and the ladies re port that the group had a most interesting and inform ative discussion of school af fairs, which are the center of much attention in Old Fort at present. Mrs. Shiflet served delicic ous refreshments at the con clusion of the discussion. Thanksgiving Supper Slated Members of the Ebenezer Methodist church are sponsor ing a supper to be served at 5:30 the afternoon of Novem ber 20, in the church recrea tion hall. Plates will be $1.00 and 50c. Proceeds are to go to the church building fund. Bazaar Is Success The Bazaar held on Friday and Saturday at the new re creation building of the Old Fort Methodist church was one of the most successful in the history of the church. Several hundred dollars were realized from the sale of homebaked cakes, cookies, candies and pies, and canned vegetables, jellies, jams and conserves. Another sale is planned for a date preceding the Christmas holidays. Tragic Fire Joseph Burgin Allison, 45, was burned to death in a fire which destroyed his home near Old Fort Sunday night. The Old Fort volunteer fire department answered an alarm at about 7:30. The entire building was ablaze when the firemen arrived. Entering the house was impossible and at the time, it was not known that Allison was in the house. The body was removed from the basement which was un der the kitchen about one o’clock Monday morning. A coroner’s jury was impaneled and an inquest will be held Wednesday night at McDowell County Courthouse. Mrs. Allison and daughter, Mary Jo had visited the cou ple’s daughters, Joan and Rita, at Brevard college where the two older girls are stu dents, and had not arrived home when the fire was dis covered. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. in the Ebenezer Methodist church with the Rev. V. N. Allen officiating. Burial will be in the Siloam cemetery. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Lucille Gilliam Allison, the three' (laughters, his mother, Mrs. Lillie B. Allison of Old Fort; three brothers, Taft, Donald and Cecil of Old Fort, and two sisters, Mrs. Robert Grindstaff of Old Fort and Mrs. Luther Wheelon of Mor ganton and a half-brother, Sandy Allison of Old Fort. Old Fort Junior Woman’s club The Old Fort Junior Wo man’s club is starting its an nual drive for clothing. The drive will begin Monday, No vember 23 and end Monday, December 7. Anyone having clothing for this drive is asked to contact Mrs. Bill Hogan, Clothing Closet chair man, or any member of the club. Clothing may be left at the Farmers Federation store in Old Fort, or will be picked up by club members upon request. The only requirement is that the garments be in good con dition. Clothing of all types is needed. After collections have been made, clothing will be sorted by club members and distributed throughout the community to those need ing aid. Personals __ Mrs. W. S.
