Slide a paper plate over the shank of your fire tongs or long-handled forks. The plate'll deflect the heat's sting. OUTDOOR COOKING TIPS If* the little things that make a barbecue successful...set the stage for a memorable day outdoors. To start a stubborn fire, try pouring fat drippings over a pile of news papers. The fat won't leave an odor on the charcoal... or taint the food's flavor. Start the fun early—Pass out chef's hats and aprons...let guests cook their own dishes ...make them feel it's their affair. For unexpected guests, add a little Maltex to the hamburger meat. It adds a different flavor — assures enough food for everyone. And for a truly succulent dish anytime, try Party-Burgers. All you need is 1 Vi pounds ground beef, 1 tbsp. chopped onion, I tea spoon salt, Vi tsp. pepper, Vi tsp. garlic powder, 2 tbsp. A.l. Sauce, Vi cup milk, 6 strips bacon. Thoroughly mix all ingredients except bacon. Shape into 6 large patties,—Wrap each with a bacon strip. Broil until patties are browned and bacon cooked. Serve at once. Delicious cooked indoors or out. Makes 6 servings. K MONTREAT Miss Julia Stokes The Women of the Montreat church will hold their annual meeting on Monday, Dec. 7 (note change of day). Motorists Warned Of Cold Weather Tar Heel motorists had bet ter gird themselves now for another “cold war” in the months ahead. Motor Vehicles Commissioner Ed Scheidt de clared today. “The annual battle of driv ers against the elements will soon he underway,” he warn ed. “And the victors will be those car owners who are smart enough to be prepared and skillful enough in their driving to outwit Old Man Winter.” The vehicle chief urged mo torists to “make sure now— before the frantic rush—that your vehicle is prepared for the severe tests which cold weather, snow and ice create overnight. Have your car ser viced by a reliable expert, so you can really depend on it when the going gets rough.” He emphasized that "pre ventive maintenance pays off handsomely in any season, but particularly during the winter months.” Scheidt added. “You’ll need anti-freeze eventually; why not install it now? Your bat tery will receive additional strain because of heater, de froster, wipers and increased use of lights; check now to make certain your battery has the power you’ll need. “You’ll want to be warm; make sure your heater will perform. You'll want to see clearly in rain, sleet and snow. Therefore check windshield wiper arms for adequate pres sure to remove these hazard ous obscurements. You’ll want to stop safely. Therefore ad just brakes and make sure your tiros have pood treads. Always carry a set of rein forced tire chains in the trunk, ready for use when needed, for the most reliable stop and-go traction during severe snow or ice conditions. “Remember last winter when so many motorists were caught without tire chains the commissioner asked. Seheidt further recommend ed an engine tune-up to pre vent stalling in traffic. “Neg lect of any of the foregoing items will lead to regret, he cautioned. “With your car in shape and properly equipped, the battle of winter is half won,” he concluded. “The rest of the battle will depend largely on careful attitudes and skill in, driving under the variety of weather and road conditions which will prevail during the coming cold season."'
