It was June of 1933 that the entire Beacon plant was moved from New Bedford. Mass., to Swan nanoa and executive offices set up here. Just before Brother Thomas left us a new classroom was built under the church for the Primary de partment, which entailed ex cavation of quite a lot of dirt. Brother Thomas donned his overalls, beckoned his fellow members, and with pick and shovel in hand, made good rid dance of this dirt, and a nice new department was the re sult of their efforts. From 1935 to 1941 Rev. Wy man E. Wood was our pastor. It was during this period that we built the first baptistry in our church. Up until this time our baptismal services were held at the river or an outside pool. My daddy was baptized in the outside pool of the Be rea Baptist church on a cold winters day, but he suffered no ill effects. I was baptized in the Swannanoa River on a day in June and the tempera ture of the water was not too disconcerting. In December of 1939 we purchased some land just back of our church from J. S. Slagle and wife, on which there was an old dwell ing. This dwelling was used for Sunday school classrooms until it became a safety haz ard and had to be torn down. From 1941 to 1944 Rev. Robert P. Hamby was our pas tor. During this period we PIX THEATRE BLACK MOUNTAIN, N. C. For the year ending June JO, 1944 our total gifts to all causes was $6,701.95. For the year ending June 30, 1959, or fifteen years later, our receipts totaled $46,220.77. The church treasurers who preceded me were Brother L. B. Buchanan, Brother W. IV. Ross, Brother Harry L. Mc Peeters and Brother Henry D. Franklin. Brother L. T. Ham rick was our first financial secretary. Mrs. Latt McMa hon now holds that office. The late Brother B. C. Blanken ship did an outstanding piece of work as our church clerk. The records were beautifully kept, exact and complete, in cluding even minute details. Brother Charles F. English, our present church clerk, is following in his footsteps. (To be concluded) MRS. S.
