2 ■ Black Mountain (NC) NEWS — Thursday, August 11, 1960 Montreal The Montreat Woman’s Club held a most interesting meet ing on Monday, August 1 in the club house. The president. Airs. B. L. Shillinglaw presid ed After a short business meeting Mrs. R. W. Pack show ed pictures taken on their trip around the world. The pic turps she showed at this time were some she took in the Con go, Africa last winter. These were interesting and most timely. Mrs. Alex McCutchen a missionary of Congo was in troduced. Refreshments were served by the ladies on Vir ginia Road with Miss Marga ret Davis and Mrs. John Haw serving. The season is drawing to a close with only two more meet ings of the club for the sea son. The last meeting which is to be a picnic supper will be held in the club room at 5 p.m. on Monday Aug. 22. At this meeting the new officers will be installed and the me morial to those members who have died during the last year will be held. The speaker for the next meeting, Aug. 15 will be: Mrs. W. E. Norwood of Asheville Welfare will speak on “Safe Adoption." me morning wuismp vice was held in Anderson Auditorium at 11. Dr. M. A. Benfield, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, Shreve port, La. preached. At 8 p.m. Dr. Harry Fifield, pastor of 1st Presbyterian Church, Atlanta preached. In the morning the chorus sang “Send Forth Thy Spirit." and at the evening service John Ireson, baritone, sang "Lord God of Abraham . The Church Extension Con ference is one of the largest conferences of the season, the meetings are all fine and well attended. The next week end will include the inauguration of Dr C. Grier Davis as pre sident of the Mountain Re treat Association. This Ser vice will be held in Ander son Auditorium on Saturday at 8 p.m. At 7 p.m. Dr. John R. Cunningham will speak on “Montreat's Place in the Church of the Future”. At 8 p.m. Dr. Marion A Boggs will give “The Charge to the president” and Dr. Davis will give: “The Acceptance Ad dress of the President”. On Sunday at 11 a.m. Dr. George Docherty, minister of the New York Ave. Presby terian Church, Washington, D. C. will preach At 7 p.m. Dr. Frank Price former mis sionary in China. Moderator of the’ General Assembly 1953 will preach. At 8 p.m. Dr. Gordop Powell of Sidney, Aus tralia, Minister of St. Step hens Presbyterian Church, Scott College. Melborne will speak on “Christ’s Purpose for His Church.” me Mime comerence win continue on until Aug. 28. Many visitors are in Mon treat enjoying the last few weeks of vacation. Mrs. W. J. Gammon hail as guest this week, Mrs. Frank Alexander and two children Join and Janet of Long Beach, Miss.. Mrs. R. W. Coit of Lou isiana and Miss Mary Green of Washington, D. C. Mrs. Clarence W. Legerton and Mrs. W. Alexander Wier of Charleston, S. C. are in the Legerton cottage for this month. Dr. and Mrs. Clarence W. Legerton, Jr. and Rev. and Mrs. Fitzhugh. M. M. Leger ton and three children of Georgia will be in the Leger ton cottage for a few weeks. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Folger of Pickens, S. C. spent a few days last week with Dr. and Mrs. Harry Bryan of Char lotte who were in their cottage, “Singing Hills’’ last week. Miss Blanch Swindell of University of Wisconsin visit ed Mrs. R. B. Cunningham last week. .Mr. ana .mis. snaw smun were guests of Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Scarborough for the week end. They, with the Scarborough family took a trip on “Tweetsie” Saturday morn ing in Boone. The Shaw Smiths gave a delightful en tertainment on last Saturday night in Anderson auditorium. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Wof ford of Johnston and four children visited Mr. and Mrs. Guy Lipscolm last week. Mar garet Fuller will remain for another week. Mr. and Mrs. George Clem ens ami two sons of Bartow, Fla. visited Mrs. Charles Wat kins during the week end. Last week Mrs. Watkins had as guest, Mrs. Marshall Fant, Mrs. Charles Fant and Mrs. Walker all of Anderson, S. C. Miss Hadie Anders is spend ing a few weeks in Ben Lippen in the conference there as guest of friends. Mrs. Alva Hardie and daugh ter, Mrs. William Smith and three sons of Miami, Fla. are spending a few weeks with Miss Grace Hardie. Miss Emily Winn of Deca tur, who was the guest of Miss Grace Hardie is now spending a few weeks with Miss Elizabeth Cole. Miss Cole has returned from a three week study in the University of Wisconsin, Madison, Wise, where she took Latin Work shop, a special course for La tin teachers. Rev. and Mrs. Barton Hell muth and mother of Ashburn, Va. spent last week in the Close cottage. Dr. and Mrs. Dan Murphy and two sons of St. Peters burg, Fla. visited in Montreat last week. Mrs. J. C. Grier entertained her club “Entre Nous" of Rock Hill on Tuesday in her home on Virginia Road. Some 15 members drove up for luncheon and meeting. Mrs. C. O. Pat ten is president of the club. The Cottage Owners will have their annual picnic on Friday at 5 p.m. in the Gate side Park. In case of rain the Skating Rink will be used. All cottage owners and their friends are invited to come with a picnic lunch. Dr. Frank Anderson is president.
