I I L Mountain Musings bv Gene Byrd a I Lush, Lovely August August, the most opulent of months is here. August is a sensuous season of ripening fruits and impending harvest. If a man's life were reckon ed in accordance with the months of the year, August would be the prime of life. August, like other months, brings to us memories of life and love of births and deaths, joys and sorrows. The birthstone for this month is. 1 believe, the Sar donyx which represents conju gal bliss. August is a good month for marriages. People whose birth dates lie between July 22 and August 21 are said to be under the sign of Leo, the Lion, a fiery barren sign that rules the heart, blood and nerves. According to one horoscope, persons born at this time un ually manifest superior power in whatever direction their minds lead them. Leo people are warned to avoid excesses of all kinds, and should choose mental rather than muscular work, or those kinds requir ing sprightliness than stren gth. Sunday is the lucky day for you folks and your best month is said to be either Janpary or October. August must have been a good month for Mama and Papa. Their three sweet daughters were born in Aug ust and I want to wish each of them many more happy birthdays. As I grow older. 1 realize more and more how much 1 am indebted to each of my sisters. Another thing, Dog Days are slated to end August 11. Old timers, who have been desirous of “hay-curing” weather will welcome this. It has been raining pretty con stantly at that. I believe Dog Days are supposed to have started in July 3. Modern mountaineers may not be superstitious, but they do pay pretty close attention to the ideas handed down from their pioneer forefathers, ('ranee of Scenery: Frank Byrd created compli cations when he erected two lovely homes on the lots just below our home, the Byrd’s Nest, on the Montreat Road. People who have not visited us in the past year or so and who remember a vacant field next to us blithely buzz past our home and reach the Mon treat Gate ei’e they realize something is amiss and re trace their steps. The latest of our guests, Jewel's brother, Dr. B. L. Hallman and his family of Atlanta made this mistake last evening. "Brother” has a charming family, and how I like to hear that man talk. His conver sation opens up fields that 1 do not ordinarily hear dis cussed. How wonderful it is that God gave man the ability to communicate with his fel lows. One of the most interesting topics that was brought forth in our "rocking chair confer ence” was the importance of the role of psychiatry in mod ern life. It was most heartening to hear the good doctor relate the advances that have been made in treatment of mental disease. Who knows ? It would be easy for my De pression nurtured generation to be almost envious of the op portunities confronting the youth of today. (Sometimes I have more than a sneaking suspicion that I didn’t do as I should with the opportunities that were afford ed me.) 1 ho Ada Burnett ItocKer: A stately rocker occupies a place of honor in our living room. It was bequeathed to me by my much loved Cousin Ada Burnett because “it suits you, Gene”. This very comfortable chair is sometimes a bone of conten tion in the family almost with disastraus results on occasion. So many of the young people that have visited us have com mented on the restfulness of the chair. Last evening as “Brother” sat in this historic chair, we told him the story connected with our acquisition of it, Ada’s love and the kindness of Hay wood and Adanett. “When you make your will, “quoth he” I’d like to have — FOR RENT — Furnished Apartment. 2 Bedrooms, living room, all-electric kitchen, one & one-half baths. I think of the annual pilgrimage that Della and 1 would make to the Trotter home in West Asheville, the —Turn to Page 7 LIB'S PEEKIN'— (From Page 3) Smart, and Miss Judy Hamill of Asheville, and Miss Hatsy Tillinghast.
