Human Steam-rollers
The Owen High Warhorses
must have felt as if they had
been run over by a giant
steamroller last Friday night
when they tangled with Lee
Edwards at Memorial Stadium.
Our boys gave ’em a real good
battle for most of the game
but injuries and time began
to tell on the lighter and less
experienced Warhorses who
went down to defeat to the
tune of 30-6.
Injuries to several key play
ers on the Owen squad hamp
ered them considerably and
what must be the heaviest line
of beef in Lee Edwards his
tory' didn’t do much to help
the situation.
Two of the big factors in
the Lee Edwards victory were
two boys from Swannanoa of
all places. Hoyt Ballard, who
lives just below this reporter
on Northeast avenue in Grove
mont, is probably one of the
fastest and most versatile
players on the grid lineup of
Cap Isbill. Another stalwart
performer for Isbill is big Bud
Hipp (all 230 pounds of him)
who hails from down Bee Tree
road way. Time after time
this big boy hit the Owen ball
carriers with bone-crushing
tackles.
Reports today (Monday) in
dicate that three and possibly
four starters will see limited
or no action in the game at
Owen Friday night.
We don’t often single-out in
dividual players but this week
we couldn’t keep from men
tioning the tremendous kick
ing of one Cecil Caldwell. This
boy looks like another Joe
Robinson in the making. Those
punts he was getting off last
Friday were on a par with
college kickers. We would
also like to mention the fine
passing of Marvin Harper who
connected with Jackie Hughes
and Howard Lewis for good
gains, and then to big Bob
Lowe who gathered it in and
carried it on to pay dirt dur
ing the second quarter of Fri
day night’s game.
i wish it was possible to
single out the entire squad for
giving all they had against Lee
Edwards but space does not
permit. We will just say good
luck to the team this coming
Friday night and say that we
hope all the fans in the area
will turn out to see the game.

Woman Wins Merit Badges
This is about a young 13
year old boy who like most
youngsters his age is a boy
scout.
Second class Scotty McCall
earned his life saving and
swimming merit badges this
summer after many long hours
jf hard work to master the
tough requirements for the
aadges. Most any young buy
is proud to be able to prove
himself worthy of a merit
badge, but to Scotty it meant
just a little bit more because
he is blind.
Seottv who is the son of Mr.
and Mrs. William H. McCall
jf Americus, Ga.. and the
grandson of Mrs. Edna McCall
if Bee Tree road, Swannanoa,
Upon informing his father of
nis accomplishments said that
he was so thrilled over win
ning the badges that he could i
hardly wait to get them sewn
on his merit badge sash.
Scouting is Scotty’s great
est love presently and only re
cently did he become a Second
Class Scout. After winning
this badge, his comment was:
Second class down. First class
to go. Most of all he hopes
to win the highly coveted
Eagle badge. His proud father
says that he’ll do it too be
cause he has the determina
tion.
This fall Scotty will return
to the Georgia Academy for
the Blind at Macon where he
will enter the eighth grade.
An award which he values
very highly is one given him
by fellow campers at the Unit
ed States Marine Supply Base
in Albany, Ga., where they vot
ed him the individual with the
Most Scout Spirit.
Besides scouting. Scotty's
other prime interest is Morse
Code. He has passed require
ments for this merit badge
and hopes soon to become a
“ham” operator -and you can
bet your boots that he will do
just that.
This young boy although
handicapped by blindness has
had the faith and willpower to
prove himself equal to his fel
low . couts in mastering tin
requirements for his merit
badges.
We hope some day to be able
to write about Scotty McCall
being awarded the Eagle Scout
badge, and we sincerely be
lieve that day will come.

WELL LIGHTED TOWN
Black Mountain is one of
the best lighted small towns in
the country. 1 arrived at this
conclusion after returning
from a trip through several
states and Southern Canada.
We saw no small town with
any better lights than we have
here and many with a system
not as good.
Congratulations are certain

manager.

YOUTH PROGRAM—
(From Page 1)
was underway and the club
was persuaded to enlarge their
original idea to include a
youth recreation area for the
whole community and a cent
ral building for all youth act
ivities instead of only for the
Boy Scouts.
With the impetus of the
"Finer Carolina" program be
hind it and the help of many
persons and clubs in the area,
the youth center became a
reality. We now have on
lease from the Town 15 acres
of centrally located land ad
joining the town's Lake Toma
hawk recreat ion park.
Through this land flows a
good sized stream. There are
pine trees and camping areas.
There is a large graveled
parking area by the Youth
Center building. The build
ing contains one large, high
ceiling game room and meet
ing room, one small meeting
room, two equipment storage
rooms with 12 lockers for club
equipment, toilet rooms, and
an automatic warm air heating
system. On the grounds is a
little league baseball diamond
and plenty of room for furth
er expansion.
The State College instruct
ors told us our minimum budg
et to operate a youth program
year around would be $10,000
to $12,000 of which the largest
single item would be the di
rector’s salary.
It seemed necessary to have
an organization set up to run
the Youth program and to
have it legally constituted so
that gifts to it would be tax
free. Operation Youth. Inc.
was the result. The directors
of Operation Youth include
town officials, civic club mem
bers. ministers, teachers, and
business leaders of the com
munity.
Some of the directors of
Operation Youth then can
vassed industry in the valley
and pledges were secured to
cover the director’s salary.
The 1960-61 campaign is
now in progress. All the civic
clubs through the Civic Coun
cil have pledge cards and in
formation sheets on hand to
help them canvass not only
their own club membership
but the area district of their
choice.
Anyone interested in help
ing with the campaign should
