Old Fort Garden Club Meets With Mrs. Smith The Old Fort Garden club met last Thursday afternoon with Mrs. Sarah Smith at her home. After a dessert course was served and enjoyed the members brought out mater ial and made flower arrange ments which they carried to “shut-ins” named at the meet ing. Mr. and Mrs. Beecher Hud gins of Akron, Ohio, visited last week at the home of their nieces, Miss Eula Grant and Mrs. Viola Nesbitt. Mr. Hud gins is a brother of the late M. L. Grant and Mrs. Hudgins is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Allison, former res idents of Old Port. Army Pfc. Jack I). Raffield, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack E. Raffield of Old Port and Army Pvt. Charles W. Duscan, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard W. Duncan of N'ebo, are partici pating with other personel from the 3rd Armored Divis ion in a field training exer cise in Grafenwohr, Germany. The six weeks exercise is scheduled to be concluded Oct. 1. Raffield, 19, is a mortar gunner in the Headquarters Company of the division’s 4(lth Infantry in Kirch Gons. 'T,son of Mr. and Mrs. t5en, 11 • Carver of old Fort graduated Aug. 12 from the Aviation Machinist’s Mate school at the Naval Air Tech nical Training Center, Mem phis, Tenn. .During the 24-week course, students were instructed in repair and maintenance of both reciprocating and jet en gines, and trained in basic electric and fuel systems of aircrafts. Graduates of the course are prepared for advancement in the aviation field. DJd Fort Junior Woman’s C lub Holds Orientation -Jhe executive board of the Old Fort Junior Woman’s club held an orientation for new members of the club, Monday evening at the home of Mrs. Donald Anderson in Old Fort. The constitution and by laws were explained by Mrs. Walter Williams, parliamen tarian of the club. The point system was brought up by Mrs. Garvin McFntire, point svstem chair man. The Federated State pro jects were defined by Mrs. Howard Grant, ways and means chairman. The clubs local projects were pointed out by Mrs. Don ald Anderson, vice-president. The club budget system was explained by the club presi dent, Mrs. Francis 0. Miles. Mrs. Gilmer Byrd, correspond ing secretary, Mrs. Donald Bray, treasurer, Mrs. Louise Haney, recording secretary, Mrs. Harold Martin, member ship. chairman and Mrs. Ralph Nodine, social chairman were the other board members present. The new members present were Mrs. Paul Brooks, Mrs. Kenneth Griffin, Mrs. Larry Crawford, Mrs. Bob Bartltt and Mrs. Clyde Silver. Richard 0. Kelly and his sister Pat Kelly of Phoenix Ariz., are visiting their moth er, Mrs. Bertie Lon Kelly at her home in Old Port. Pat and her younger brother Locke Kelly drove him to Knoxville where Richard boarded a plane to Phoenix, to return home. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Tate who have been in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., for the last ten days, re turned to their home here this Tuesday. They visited Mr. and Mrs. Bill Faw and Mr. and Mrs. G. S. Byrd, all for mer residents of Old Fort. Mr. and Mrs. W. F,. Teague spent Friday with Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Jennings and young son in Greenville, S. C Mrs. Jennings is the grand daughter of the Teagues, be ing the former Nancy Hughes of Old Fort. Mr. and Mrs. Edward Car ver and two small sons, Gary and Roger, have returned tc their home after a week at Miami Beach, Fla. Janet Marston has entered the Memorial Mission hospital school of nursing in Asheville, Miss Marston is a 1960 grad uate of the Old Fort High school. Craig Grant is spending some time with his aunts, Mrs. Viola Nesbitt and Miss Eula Grant in Old Fort. Miss Bernice Huff who is living with her sister, Mrs, Fred Bradley, was seriously injured in a fall at the Brad ly home Saturday evening. She was taken to Memorial Mission hospital in Asheville where she remained for treat ment of a leg injury. Rufus Bryant has returned to his home after undergoing surgery at Memorial Missios hospital in Asheville. His con dition is greatly improved. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Staffer, Jr., are visiting at the home 01 Mrs. Staffer's parents, Mr. and Mrs. I. L. Caplan, Sr., in Old Fort. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Crawford of Charlotte were visitors at the homes of Mr. Crawford’s sisters, Mrs. Joe Giles and Miss Elizabeth Crawford in Old Fort last week-end. Mr. and Mrs. Vann Hughes visited at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Jennings and son in Greenville, S. C., this past week-end. BUILDERS BUSY— (From Page 1) are building a new home on Azalea avenue in the Lake wood section of Black Moun tain. Carl Bowness is the builder and plans were pre pared by H. McGuire Wood. Mr. Garton recently retired from service with the petrol eum division of Shell Oil com pany where his work took them to many parts of the world, but they have been most re cently living in England, Mr. Garton’s birthplace. Mrs. Gar ton was born and reared in Kokomo, Ind. Their new home features a music room which will con tain an organ as well as a piano and hi-fi equpiment. Mr. Garton is a talented organist whom the musical group in Black Mountain will welcome with special enthusiasm. The Gartons are living now in the Cooley guest cottage while their home is being built.
