What s Goin
At Owen
BY ELOISE STYLES
Besides our nine new teach
ers and a whole new freshmai
class, there are many othe
changes here at Owen. Th
biggest change is in the tini
schedule. The activity perioi
has been entirely eliminated ti
encourage extra-curricular ac
tivities being carried out afte
school. This makes available
more time for actual schoo
work. As of now the firs
three class periods are 60 min
utes long and the last two 8;
minutes long. The fourth per
iod will remain 85 minute:
long all year, since the luncl
schedule necessitates that this
class period be split. An 81
minute split period is about
twice as effective as a 60 min
ute split period. The other 81
minute period will be rotated
i. e. the first, second, third
and fifth periods will take
turns being 85 minutes long
This will teach techniques foi
teaching longer periods. Re
search has shown that more
work is accomplished in one
85 minute period than in twe
45 minute periods under the
same teacher.

Baseball is said to be the national pastime. Confidentially, we
believe savers far outnumber ball fans.
The savings game has many advantages. Once your account is
opened you are always on base and never really strike out, no matter how
many paydays you fail to connect.
Even when you are in a slump and temporarily not saving a dime,
no one boos or throws things at you. A Savings Account at Northwestern
makes us your greatest fan.

Tho elimination of all study
1 halls has released the teachers
to teach five full periods of
, subject matter each. This has
1 allowed the curriculum to be
’ expanded to include the fol
’ lowing: Spanish I, Latin III,
, College Algebra (Algebra 111),
I Business English, and addi
tional sections in many other
subjects. Because there are
no study halls, all students are
required to take five subjects,
allowing them to graduate
with 20 credits.
Much new equipment has
been added which make both
studying and teaching easier.
Some of it is as follows: two
new tape recorders, apparatus
for demonstrating mathemat
ical principles, two new mov
ie projectors, five compound
microscopes, one disectascope,
and other devices to demon
strate scientific principles and
to carry out experiments.
(Beginning next week the
new teachers at Owen will be j
interviewed one by one in this j
column.)
