What s Goin At Owen BY ELOISE STYLES Besides our nine new teach ers and a whole new freshmai class, there are many othe changes here at Owen. Th biggest change is in the tini schedule. The activity perioi has been entirely eliminated ti encourage extra-curricular ac tivities being carried out afte school. This makes available more time for actual schoo work. As of now the firs three class periods are 60 min utes long and the last two 8; minutes long. The fourth per iod will remain 85 minute: long all year, since the luncl schedule necessitates that this class period be split. An 81 minute split period is about twice as effective as a 60 min ute split period. The other 81 minute period will be rotated i. e. the first, second, third and fifth periods will take turns being 85 minutes long This will teach techniques foi teaching longer periods. Re search has shown that more work is accomplished in one 85 minute period than in twe 45 minute periods under the same teacher.
