NO 9-3381 FromMemoirs In Memory of An Unusual Lady She was tall, six feet plus, a gorgeous, intriguing figure, beautiful twinkling hazel eyes, a face that could light up with a smile that was most enchant ing, and Scottish red hair which seemed to change colors ' from the morning sunrise to the golden sunset. Her voice must have been like Heavenly music. Her commanding per sonality could subdue the most stubborn person. This lady was named just plain Suphron ia Rurnette Walker. Her special hobby was big game hunting, such as drown ing a big buck deer with her bare hands in a hole in the creek a short distance from her home, which was the an cestral home of Frederick Burnette, II, who was her father. Or, in shooting a black bear and carting him to her home, where he was dressed, and then fed to her hungry men folks who returned home from a day of hunting in the mountains with little success in their hunt. The first white woman to set foot on the high top of Mount Mitchell Peak in Bun combe county, North Carolina was none other than Suphronia Burnette Walker. She climbed the rugged side of the peak along with her husband, James Washington Walker, and Dr. Elisha Mitchell, president of the University of North Car olina, who was the discoverer of the highest mountain East of the Mississippi River called Mount Mitchell Beak in West ern North Carolina. She gave birth to 12 child ren, and was grandmother to more than 30 grandchildren. Yes, she was my dear, dear grandmother, and I am so happy to write these lines in her memory, a great frontier lady. • RENT IT ■ CLASSIFIEDS! NEWS • NO 9-4101 • Black Mtn.
