April 30, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. Herbert Coman. Grovemont. Approximately 50 ladies called between three and six o’clock. Arrangements of spring flowers were used 'throughout the home. The tea table was laid with a lace cloth, and was centered with a design of lilacs and lighted | candles. Mrs. Haywood Farr, Mrs. Hays Connor and Mrs. Leslie Gwaltney assisted with the serving. Among out-of-town guests were: Mrs. Frank Sta nley of Fallston, Mrs. Claude Ross of Sylva. Mrs. C. L. Roy ster of Polkville, and Mrs. Robert G. We took a trip to Greenville, Ga., and saw more dogwood and.other spring flowers, so if you did not see any Montreat news last week you know the reason why. The executive board of the Women of the Montreat church met on Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 in the home of Mrs. C. C. Crowell on Assembly drive. The president, Mrs. W. Frank McElroy was in charge. The morning worship ser vice was held in Gaither Chap el at 11 on Sunday morning. The pastor, Dr. A. F. Fogartie preached on “Facing Life with the Living Christ”—John 20: 21. The choir under the di rection of Mr. Allan Guy sang "Create In Me a Clean Heart” by Mueller, as offertory an them. Vespers was at 7:15 with the music group having the pro gram. The subject was “Fav orite Hymns and Their Orig ins.” The prayer services will be held on Wednesday at 3:30 in the green room of the Assem bly Inn and at 7:15 in Gaither Chapel. The theme is “Locked Gates Opened.” The Asheville Presbyterian Mens rally will be held on next Sunday at 2:30 p.m. in the Hazelwood church. The United Church Women of the Black Mountain area will observe National May Fellowship Day Friday at the Assembly Inn. At noon the business session will be con ducted in the green room. The luncheon will be served at 1 p.m. in the dining room of the Inn. Dr. E. T. Thompson of Union Theological Semi nary, Richmond, Va., will be the inspirational speaker af ter the lunch. Please make reservation for the luncheon at the Inn desk. A group of young people of the 1st Presbyterian church, Charlotte, held a retreat in the Abernathy cottage on Georgia terrace over the week end. They attended the wor ship service of the Montreat church Sunday morning. The crowning of the May Queen will be held on Satur day afternoon at 3:30 on the lawn in front of Anderson aud itorium. Dale Grathen, soph omore of the college will be the May Queen. Mark Guy will be the crown bearer and maid of honor, Ann Gilliland, soph, representative. Miss Elizabeth Cole is chairman. Mrs. M. C. Wood is enter taining her Statesville club in the Assembly Inn for luncheon on Wednesday. The program will follow the luncheon. Mrs. A. F. Forgatie of Montreat will read her paper on “Gar dens of the Bible.” The guest will return to Statesville in the afternoon. Mrs. George Stockton was called to Rochester, N. Y., last week because of the illness of her sister, Mrs. Gayer. There wiy be a play on Saturday night “Family Por trait” in Howerton Rec. hall. This is a play based on the Family of Jesus under the di rection of Allan Guy. The public is invited. No admis sion charge. Duty with the Marines for women officers include posi tions as: Administration, serv ing in an executive capacity; Company Officer, supervises and trains ^listed Women Marines; Supply and Finance, supervises supply, disbursing, fiscal accounting and stock control; Training and Instruc tion, plans and teaches mili tary and non-military pro grams; Communications and Electronics, responsible for the operation of communication systems. These are but a few of the available positions. Women applying now may attend the 12 week class this summer at Quantico, Va. To be eligible, a woman must be unmarried and be at least a junior in college. During sum mer training the officer can didate may disenroll at any time. Mr. and Mrs. James Davis have been having a number of visitors since Mrs. Elliott has returned home from her oper ation in Marion hospital re cently. Those visiting her last Sunday were Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Brown of Black Moun tain, Mr. and Mrs. Woodrow Stroud and daughter Nancy of Broad River, Rev. and Mrs. Coy Davis of Davis Town, Mr. and Mrs. Sewell Brown and Mr. Eligah Lawing of Marion. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Ray and Mr. David’ son-in-law and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. James G. Vess of the Crooked Creek section, all were visiting Aunt Bessie congratulating her on her successful recovery from her goiter operation recently in Marion hospital. Rev. Paul Jorden of Davis Town is a patient in Marion hospital with a heart condi tion. Rev. Ralph Green of West Marion viisted us at Stone Mountain church last Sunday. He delivered a wonderful mes sage. Mrs. Gertrude Smith and son Charles and Mrs. Boyd Elliott attended th e revival meeting at the Church of God in Old Fort last Thursday evening. Mrs. Nancy Nelon is very ill at the home of her son and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Nelon in this community. Mr. and Mrs. Memory Brad ley and children of Bills Creek visited Mr. R. G. Own bey and family last Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Mc Pherson and children, Bonnie and Jimmy of Miami arrived at their place in this commun ity last Saturday to spend the summer. CIVIL SERVICE ANNOUNCES NEW EXAMINATIONS The U. S. Civil Service Com mission has announced new examinations for filling the following positions throughout the United States and in Puer to Rico: Electronic Engineer, with salaries ranging from $5,335 to $7,560 a year, for duty with the Federal Communications Commission. Appraiser, paying starting salaries of $7,560 and $8,955 a year, for duty with the Bu reau of Public Roads.
