Near to the Heart of God Counties Are Allocated Funds For Roads Meeting briefly in Raleigh recently following their swear ing in ceremonies, the State Highway Commisison allocat ed $6,325,460 for Secondary road improvement for the cur rent fiscal year. The alloca tion represents approximately one-third of the total amount which will be available for rural road improvements for the current year. Remainder of the funds, some $12,000, 000 will be distributed among the various counties at a later meeting of the roads body. In explaining the allocation to the new Commission, Chair man Merrill Evans said it was necessary to distribute a por tion of the money now since a few of the highway divisions have completed work on prev iously approved projects. Ev ans did say, however, that the $6,000,000 allocation was not set aside for any particular road projects in the State, such project approval being a decision which the Commission itself will make. In other business Evans dis tributed a list of the various counties for which each of the Commissioners will be respon sible. The area of responsi bility varies from as few as four counties to as many as ten counties for one Commis sioner. The new Commissi(4n is composed of 18 members and a full-time chairman. Allocation of the above mentioned funds for Bun combe and McDowell counties is as follows: Buncombe, 551.8 unpaved mileage and $110, 360 allocation: McDowell, 252.4, unpaved mileage and $50,480 allocation. This dis tribution of money is based on a standard $200 per mile for each county’s unpaved second ary roads. In accordance with the sec tion of Statutes dealing with assignment of Highway Com missioners Yates Bennett is ! assigned Buncombe county along with Haywood, Madison and Yancey.
