America’s evangelistic move ments at the turn of the cen tury, dominated by Philip Phillips, Ira Sankey and Dwight L. Moody, contributed the gospel song. But music was an essential part of religious services for thousands of years prior to Protestantism. Jewish people traditionally chant their religious services in a minor, somewhat somber, key. Moslems call the faithful to daily prayer by a sing-song chant. Hindus and Buddhists fre qquently use music, as well as dancing, in their religious cer emonies. Roman Catholics have sung mass in Latin for centuries. But religious music never achieved its high degree of integration with religious ser vices until the advent of Pro testantism. Indeed, most of the hymns we remember from childhood were composed by some of the most famous re formers and ministers in Pro testantism. They had one grand object, and that was to put a Bible in every home, especially among the pioneers. That Bible Society has grown and today there is greater interest be inq taken in it than ever before. There is no place in the world where the Bible is not to be found. Corpmencing with July, 1940, there were four million six hundred twenty-four thousand three hundred, fifty-four copies of the New Testament furnished our men and women marching under the colors. It'has also placed with our service people and others, two hundred seventy-seven thousand one hundred eighty five Bibles and single books of the Bible, totalling one million three hundred thirteen thousand one hundred forty-two.
