....| 1 SWANNANOA NEWS | | By JIM BURLESON . . . Phone 686-3205 1,... Much Oblige, Kind Sir! Manv thanks to Robert R. Hubne’r of Western Springs, Dl., for naming the Swan nanoa News as one of his favorite columns in the Black Mountain NEWS. M e can t hold a candle to Reflections and Mountain Musing* which were Mr. Hubner's other most liked columns but we greatly appreciate the fact that we are read bv the kind gentle man. I'm always amazed to leam that the Black Hountain NEWS is read in so many distant places. We were curious about the location of Western Springs, so we got out the old atlas and found it situated about 35 miles west of Chicago. Evening Grosbeaks Arrive About a dozen Evening Grosbeaks, a rare sight in this area, flew in last week for an apparent brief stay. These big clumsy looking (but quite agile when frightened) birds always remind me of a herd of elephants on parade as they nonehalantlv stroll about in search of food. Perhaps their massive beaks give an ap pearance to that of the ele phant and its mighty trunk No matter what impression the Evening Grosbeak leaves vou with, one simply can't denv that this majestic yellow and’ brown creature has a place all his own in the bird kingdom. Home Demonstration Club New officers were elected at last week's Home Demon stration club meeting. Mrs. Ed S-aunooke was chosen pres ident with Mrs. Ervin David son chosen as vice-president. The secretarv seat went to Mrs. Robert ’York and Mrs. Noel Wilhide was elected treasurer. The Swannanoa club is cur rentlv engaged in the WLOS Commumtv Club awards drive and Mrs. Eugene Loven. A tractor salesman, driving through the countryside was surprised to see an elderly farmer plowing his field with a bull. He was about to conclude when a tremendous crack of thunder split the heavens outside. The stun ning moment was capitalized upon by Mr. Eure when he said ! in a loud, clear voice, ‘‘Great Scott, I thought the good Lord had struck him dead for lying.” A race horse is nature’s only animal that can take sev eral thousands of people for a ride at the same time. A couple of neighbor tobac co farmers were arguing vio lently about who got the earl iest start on the day's work. One contended he arose con sistently at 5 a.m. The oth er swore he got up at 4:30.
